....and so is mine! (:¦

Silly me for taking heed of the manual (page 14). I tried regions 1,2,4 with no problems - thanks for pointing it out.

RE: 5.1 DIVX DVD Player - £32.99 at Aldi

Bought one of these today and was well pleased with it playing an Xvid burnt as data. I`m no expert on these things but so far so good with playing diff types of DVDR (+ - and DVDRW).

Haven`t quite had a good play with it yet, but the 5.1 setup was a pain and it`s not multi-region, but for 33 quid I`m happy! .

RE: Second DVD or cheap starter (Tosh SD100E)

The three items I bought recently were definately not second-hand, they may have been seconds, but so far I can see nothing wrong with any of them. They all came with One Year`s Warranty, were delivered free, and worked straight from the box.

(With Dabs Auction delivery is free for items over £85, and £3.50 below.)

Toshiba 28W93B 28" Widescreen TV - £266 - elsewhere £535
Toshiba SD100E DVD Player - £133 - on one site £270
Toshiba V729B Nicam Deluxe Video - £106 - on one site £195

Total = £1000
Approximate savings = £495

Not top of the range kit, but guess who`s a Happy Teddy?

Hope this helps clear things up.

Rob

RE: Second DVD or cheap starter (Tosh SD100E)

I bought this model at the auction about six weeks ago for £133. Since then there`s been around ten up for sale every week - they must have a helluva lot of seconds!

It`s a great player though, but not multi-region.

RE: Ultimate DVD Links list part 2. With ratings as well :)

Great list, thanks for doing it, but could I add Family Box Office to R4?

http://www.fbo.com.au/dvd.asp

I`ve bought six DVDs from them recently with no problems. E-mails were replied to in real-time and they were helpful with my queries. Delivery charge for two DVDs was just over £3 by Airmail, and took around five days.

IMHO 10/10 and 10/10 so far.

Thanks - Rob

RE: Family Box Office - Oz

The R4 DVDs I ordered from these on Wednesday arrived first thing this morning - not bad considering there was a weekend in between. Just over 14 quid all-in.

RE: Family Box Office - Oz

Neither could I - they must have run out of stock. I`m not surprised at the price they charged. Sorry.

RE: NEW MODERATOR ! Welcome Westy

Hello Westy. In my short time here your posts have been very helpful - thanks and all the best.

Family Box Office - Oz

I got the link to these from these Forums and thought I`d try them out. Thanks to the poster.

The DVDs arrived today - The Thin Red Line and Fight Club (£18 inc p+p). Probably not the cheapest around but I`m happy with the price. The movies are dual-coded R2 and R4 so I can watch them on my nice new Toshiba R2!

It took about two weeks for them to come, the first week was taken up with validating my credit card - a one-off event.

At the moment they`re selling two copies of films like The Perfect Storm for approx 15 quid (inc p+p).

Sorry, I misread the two for £15 bit - it seems that *any* two from the Warner`s list are this price - if so, I thnk they`re bargains. Closes 28 October - while stocks last. I`ve ordered Perfect Storm and South Park (Bigger, Longer and Uncut) for the princely sum of £14.06 all-in.

There`s also DVDs for under $25 and $20. Independence Day Single Disk is approximately £9.71 (inc p+p). Gone in 60 Seconds around £8.31.

Today`s rates:
1 AUD = 0.3435 GBP
1 GBP = 2.9116 AUD

http://www.fbo.com.au/

I would appreciate comments on these prices.

Thanks - Smokey

RE: is there any were i can buy bootleg dvd for a cheap price????

Have a look around your own town for secondhand pukka DVDs, are there markets or anything? I got a perfectly good version of "Storm" yesterday for a fiver. There were loads more in the 8-10 quid range.

Unless of course you`re looking for the latest releases...

RE: Deliveries stolen at post office

Heh Heh! Slightly O/T, but I just lost a 5.1 speaker system with Parcel Farce - not an easy feat I think! Every time I phoned to query the delivery it was "on the van" but never actually got to me. In the end they admitted that the driver was being "inteviewed" by the Police. :)

Smokey

RE: in-movies.com anybody used them?

I live in Plymouth - so far this month I`ve watched 12 movies (sad, I know!) not bad for 15 quid and 6 days still left.

These included:Proof of Life, Traffic, What Lies Beneath and 15 Minutes.

If I thought they could keep this up (and get new movies regularly) I`d go for a year`s subscription - £130.

RE: HELP! - Cheap 2nd DVD Player needed - recommendations PLEASE!

Hi, I got my Alba104 a month ago after reading about it here - £99.99 at Argos. So far I`ve had a great run with it - it`ll play all of the above and other stuff like Mp3s, even some music I put on a CD-RW, to see if it had burned okay. I haven`t tried R4 as I don`t have any, but you could do worse than this machine. It can also tape straight to video.

I believe you`ll have to specifically ask for this item as it`s meant to be a substitute for another model.

RE: Argos, Alba, and my questions . . . . .

Thirteen, it might be an idea to specifically ask for the "substitute" ie 104. I did, and they were quite happy with my asking, although they thought I was a bit mad. I`d read the posts on this Forum for advice and I only wanted the 104 - nothing else.

Or do you have another Argos nearby that you could try?

HTH - Rob

Warm Disks/Alba 104

I`ve had this machine for nearly a month now and no problems whatsoever, but when I take a DVD out it feels quite warm. I never noticed this when playing them on my PC. Is this anything to bother about?

TIA - Rob

RE: Looking for a cheap 32

Thanks for the tip captainshadswell, I did a search and found their website - for anyone interested, it`s here:

http://www.boxclever.co.uk/

They`ve got a Philips 28" Widescreen TV with Dolby Pro Logic on offer at £249.99 + £9.99 Delivery (ex-rental with 3-month`s Guarantee)

RE: DISGRACEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I`m in total agreement about this use of kids, it`s unacceptable, but what can we do?

Some of these same "politicians" lived together quite amicably (after a fashion) while guests of Her Majesty in Long Kesh/The Maze. They may be older and greyer but they`re still the same ones who tried their damndest to kill people like me in the 70`s. Personally I wouldn`t be too confident of their unbiased efforts at resolving this latest problem - it might cost them votes in their *new* careers.

On a more optimistic note: it was good to see an IRA/SinnFein representative, and one from the Loyalists, on Channel 4 News being in agreement that *something* has to be done for the sake of these children. As long as they`re talking there`s hope.

RE: Help needed - Surround Sound System

I ordered one of these earlier today but I wasn`t sure what AC-3 was. I looked at the DVD`s box and it`s in it so.......thank you Visa.

They don`t have any stock in at the moment according to the site and the e-mail confirmation - that gives me time if I change my mind, although I doubt if I will.

Personally, I love reading about all the high-spec stuff, it gives me an idea what to aspire to, as I`m new to it. I can believe the poster who said that it`s like digging a hole for your money - but it`s fun!

Now I`ll just go and give the neighbours their earmuffs.

Cheers - Rob

RE: Help needed - Surround Sound System

I got the Novatech mag today and it`s got a Surround System for £99.97. If you`re interested, search using the code NOV-HT510. It might be cheap and nasty, I don`t know about these things - yet!

RE: Resevoir dogs, Suicide Kings and Killing Zoe. All for £14.20!

I`ve just ordered this and had a look at the movies` individually-boxed prices at DVD Box Office - they came to over £33 - quite a saving I think. I`ll be well-chuffed if I get them.

Rob

RE: Rent as many DVD`s as you want for £15 a month!!

Quite agree Mac1, I`m sure they`re not as good as Blockbuster, and don`t pretend to be as far as I`m aware. I don`t know what Blockbuster charge but I`ve had 8 movies in the past month for my 15 quid - including Hannibal, and no trips to collect them or to take the movies back, all postage-free. :)

Traffic arrived today, which I wasn`t expecting, although I had ordered it. That`s the only problem with InMovies - you can select what *you* want next but it doesn`t always work that way! There is also a "Most Wanted" feature but it ties up one of your slots until the movie becomes available.

So far, so good.

Cheers - Rob

RE: NTSC playback & backing-up problems

I`m new to DVDs and seem to have fell on my feet with all the problems people are having with recording them to video etc. All the equipment I have is dirt cheap from Argos so I`ve definately been lucky, I`ve recorded Regions 1 & 2 straight to Video with as good a quality as you can get. I can play home-made ;-) VCDs and CD-R/CD-RWs no problem.

VCR - Bush VCR870NVP £99.99 (over a year old, maybe out of stock)
DVD Player - Alba 104 £99.99 (brand new)
CTV - Hitachi C1421R/T 21" £120 (well old)

I also got a Scart switchbox thingy - don`t know if that made a difference but it saves me getting off my backside!

I know I`ve not got the best home-entertainment system in the world but it`s about all I could afford - and it all works great!

Maybe it`s the Luck of the Oirish?

Regards - Rob

RE: futureent - where do they ship from?

I got my first DVDs from them today (ordered Monday), all R1 and sent from Sittingbourne, Kent.

Hope this helps - Rob

RE: Rent as many DVD`s as you want for £15 a month!!

I think the "Free" ones are for referring someone who joins, but I`m not sure.

All the movies I`ve had so far are Region 2 - can`t see them renting out any other types.

Cheers - Rob

Edit = Sorry, but I`ve just come across this thread on the same subject.

RE: Rent as many DVD`s as you want for £15 a month!!

Hello Mac1, I`ve used these for exactly a month today and no problems so far. I`ve had 8 movies in that time but could have had more if I`d actually had a DVD player when I started!

Not too sure about how up-to-date the selection is - I`m just getting interested in movies - but right now I`ve got Hannibal 2-CD out, if that`s any indication.

A year`s subscription upfront is £130 (10.83 a month), which is what I might go for if they keep up the good work until my initial 3 months are over.

You should bear in mind that you`re at the mercy of the Post Office but, for me, InMovies has been good so far.

Cheers - Rob

Thanks for the good advice

I had no idea what I wanted so I got the Alba 104 from Argos on the basis of all the positive comments I read here last week - they thought I was crazy when I said I wanted the substitute and refused to have the one from the catalogue!

It`s been doing great things since I got it and reading everything I put into it, so I spent ages yesterday trying to find information on recording straight to VCR. Everywhere I looked I got negative answers, usually to do with MacroVision (which I don`t really understand). I accepted that maybe this couldn`t be done. This morning I just had a go at doing a straight copy as I would from TV to VCR and it worked perfectly!

I for one am definately over the moon with this £99.99 player, so "thanks very much" to those who shared their experiences with those of us who don`t have a clue.

Cheers - Smokey
