RE: Sound Quality Fault with Toshiba 210e: Please Help!

My Front Panel didn`t go blank initially, but it is now.

I bought mine from a Hight Street retail as multiregion (and it was). Sods law - they don`t exist any more (Sandai - used to be in Hounslow). The website is still up, but Directory Enwuiries no longer have them in there system anywhere.

I suspect that I would have no joy from Toshiba on the basis its a modified system, hence I`ve not bothered trying.

Regards,
Paul

RE: Sound Quality Fault with Toshiba 210e: Please Help!

Mine has this problem - happened in the last month (machine purchased in July 2001). However, I do have a home cinema kit (Yammy VS-10) which wasn`t connected up at that time. After connecting up, it became obvious that the `digital out` port wasn`t affected by the fault, so I can make do.

Paul

RE: What 5.1 surround system?

Incidentally, if you have something that is worthwhile in the mid 300s please mention i - I might be able to get him to stretch to that

Ta.

What 5.1 surround system?

I`m writing on behalf of a work colleague - I myself have a VS-10.

Looking through whats currently available, and given a budget that is effectively 200-300 quid, I seemt o have narrowed his choice to.....

Sony....
HT-BE1 (Babe)
HT-SL5
HTK-215
HT-K25
HT-DDW740S

Any of this any good? If so, whats the best one, if not what would you buy?

Cheers !

RE: Faulty Tosh 210e

Update!

As suspected, the digital out is not affected , so hooked up to a DSP will do nicely!

RE: Faulty Tosh 210e

The front display is still working fine actually.

What I have yet to do though is try it with an optical connection to my VS-10 - that is currently boxed since my move - no room for it at the moment. This is on the assumption that the 5.1DTS tracks are squirted down unprocessed.

The sound is there, but it has no volume. I`ll try the optical link tonight and get back to you. If its ok through optical I`ll stick with it - if not, then new machine I guess.

Machine is 15 months old according to my receipt - sods law!

Faulty Tosh 210e

I seem to have developed a sound fault on my DVD player.

I had it wired into a Sony Prologic hifi system, and though I`m not convinced thats buggered it up, it may have. I

Symptoms are that the audio signal coming out of the DVD player is very quiet on the volume, and even turning the TV to max its still not loud enough, but anything with bass the speaker just can`t handle it properly.

This didn`t use to be the case.

Any suggestions are welcomed, but I suspect a repair (probably expensive) or a new machine are likely. Any one experienced these symptoms before?

Cheers

RE: Xmas over - sales - now to find the widescreen - which??

Just thinking a little over the Panny stuff.... is there any easy way to spot the Tau-based from the standard Pannys? I`ve not spotted an obvious Tau indicator in the codes so far.

Xmas over - sales - now to find the widescreen - which??

Merry Xmas and a Happy New year......

Well, my setup obviously doesn`t have a WS TV, so I`m contemplating the step......

Current setup - Tosh 210 (multi), Yam VS-10, 21" Panny 4:3.

In my many trips around the `usual suspects ` of stores, I`ve discovered several disturbing factors

1. The pictures are crap
2. The sound isn`t obvious.

While 2. is superflous given the VS-10, 1. is most important. From what I`ve been able to glean from my experiences, the best picture is exhibited by the Panny `Tau`s, closely followed by Tosh.

I`m tempted to get the Panny, but the Component ability of the Tosh (and with me having the Tosh DVD) is swaying me. I kjnow its very subjective, but any opinions??

I can`t justify going much over 1000 quid so far.... so net based it will be to get more for the money (I hope)
Over to you chaps!

TIA,
Paul

Which R1s better than R2?

I`m in the position currently of being in the US on holiday. I thought I`d take the opp to get some R1s while out here.

In particular - Terminator 2 SE (R1 better than R2? I noticed R1 has DTS), plus any others recommended better than R2.

Suggestions accepted gratefully.....I`m in the US til Saturday 17th....

Cheers,
Paul

RE: Yamaha HTIB20 in currys, any good?

That was made as a selling point to me by the salesguy who in my case seemed knowledgeable - as soon as I asked the differences he told me, though I already knew after looking at the Yamaha website.

The first thing he said was that the speakers could be upgraded on the HTIB-20 if I wanted better ones in the future. However, DTS was top of my list (for good or bad) and the Receiver on the HTIB-20 was too bulky for me. The VS-10 is narrower by quite some margin.

On the upgrade front - if I was going to upgrade the speakers that I would probably upgrade the receiver anyway. After all, technology moves on. DTS EX, Prologic II. By the time I upgrade,. there will be others and I`m likely to upgrade the receiver at that stage for the newer sound technologies.

As ever your mileage may vary.

RE: Yamaha HTIB20 in currys, any good?

I asked the same question when was In John Lewis (Kingston on Thames) who sell the HTIB-20 and the VS-10.

Gives an opportunity to listen to both in their Home Theatre room - I didn`t listen to them both, and the specs look similar except for the fact the JL were flogging the HTIB-20 for 349 and the VS-10 at 399. DTS clinched it for me, plus Westys `plugs`, so a VS-10 it was. JL pricematched 299 .

Get yourself into a John lewis`s for a test of both.

I`m not at all disappointed with a VS-10!

Westy is a god!

Well, thats a little over the top :) sorry Westy, but having dallied over the sound kit, I picked up the VS-10 on your recommendation from John Lewis`s . Price matched the net no problem, so 100 quid saved there! Hooked into the Tosh 210 with Optical cable and initial reactions are nothing short of `Phenomenal`

Best 300 quid I`ve spent!

Now I need recommendations for DVDs that give the system an impressive workout ........

Cheers mate!!

Yamaha - Was going to get a VS-10, better to go for a HTIB-20 or HTIB-40?

Looking at it, these `seem` better, but then I`m non techy.

HTIB-40 comprises RX-V420RDS and NS-P220 speaker package...allegedly 65W RMS output per speaker

HTIB-20 comparises RX-V396, NS-P220 speaker package.

On the face of it, both more powerful than the VS-10 which quotes less output. Since I`m not that techy, has anyone experienced the HTiB packages in comparison to the VS-10....

TIA for puttign up with me several times in a day!

Paul

JBL...... are they actually any good???

Friend of mine with no net access has been asking me about JBL stuff. Since I know nothing i thought I`d ask the wiz`s in here... any good?

I`m not talking about the cheap 15watt thing you find in the odd Comet store.

(still haven`t sorted my sound setup yet - waiting for cash)

RE: Home theatre sound.

Well, suffice to say that my parents have a DPL telly, which always sounds good to me - some Mitsubishi thing - so I have to have surround of some description on a budget preferably as I canniot justify spending a major fortune at the moment.

Home theatre sound.

As a newbie to this thing, and a desire not to waste money if I can help it here I am.

I recently purchased a- Tosh 210E, multiregion. I`m now looking at surround speaker systems.

My thinking on this is that most packages from 300 quid up are probably far better than that experienced from a 5 speaker ProLogic equipped TV.

Having wandered into a local specialist, and being directed to some receivers/decoders and speakers and an approx bundle price of 850 quid or so, I refuse to belive its necessary to spend that much.

I`ve seen mention of the Sony HTK stuff, and the Yahama VS-10 dotted around but never anythign suubstantial as a review! (or maybe I`m not looking in the right places!).

Sorry for the wittering and long post...thoughts anyone??
