I`m a huge fan of the horror genre. I didn`t know a thing about this movie other than it being "incredibly scary".
Everything was right for me and the movie. It was almost midnight. I turned off all the lights, made some popcorn and sat to watch the movie with the volume turned up. I was REALLY looking forward to being scared.
Well, the first 45 minutes of it are indeed scary, but the second half of the movie is, alas, crap.
The video transfer (for the widescreen and fullscreen versions alike) is dreadful. The movie is filled with scratches and dust particles, which are mostly noticeable during the opening scene. Other than that, the compression level is extremely high, thus compression signs are all over the place. Several scenes present a lot of grain too. And all I ask is why? It`s not as if this is an old movie or something. It`s brand new.
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is good. The surrounds are used for various creepy sound effects and the sub is also occasionally active. Scares? Well, a few (3 or 4), but nothing that`ll make you jump out of your seat.
The menus are animated with sound.
The extras include a commentary by the director, an extensive 1 hour behind the scenes featurette, 10 deleted and extended scenes (including alternate opening and ending scenes) and a picture gallery.
Bottom line - what starts as a scary story is ruined halfway by plot holes and too stupid a script.
