Review for WWE Wrestlemania 28

8 / 10

Wrestlemania is an event were WWE will always lay out all their cards and try and make it the greatest event if not of all time, of that year at least. This year they had an ace up their sleeve, that's right Flo Rida... No I kid (although he was there performing). The match they had been building up for a year John Cena vs... The Great One, The Brahma Null, the Most Electrifying Man in All of Sports Entertainment... Dwayne Johnson... Ok, THE ROCK!

I honestly never thought it would happen, but it did and it met and to some extent exceeded all expectations. The match they was epic, reminding me of Hogan/Rock from ten years earlier and yet there was a part of me that really wished that something more was on the line or that there was more to the feud beyond the fact that they both wanted a payday and to be in the main event. The match proved however that John Cena, no matter how big WWE think he is, will never ever be as big as The Rock. It also proved that if he wanted to and wanted to take a few years away from films, The Rock probably had one last run in the company. And I for one would welcome that.

The rest of the PPV was a mixbag of Great:
Undertaker vs Triple H in Hell in a Cell with HBK as Special Referee and WWE Championship match CM Punk vs Chris Jericho. Both of these were reat, though I would give it to Punk and Jericho as the match between HHH and Taker was once again crippled by THE STREAK.

Good:
The Intercntinental Match between Big Show and Cody Rhodes, Team Teddy vs Team Johnny, World Heavyweight Championship between Daniel Bryan and Sheamus. These were good and as much as I was shocked by the quick match between Bryan and Sheamus, I understand why they did it.

and the Ugly:
Randy Orton vs Kane and Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs. Beth Phoenix & Eve. Both of these felt like throwaway matches with Orton/Kane being just dull and boring and the women's match plain embarrassing to all the Divas on the roster and doesn't matter how hot Kelly Kelly is, she just can't mask this mediocrity with that.

The Hall of Fame ceremony is includedd. As with every year I keep saying just include one match or a highlight reel for each of them so that we can at least appreciate who these people are. With WWE aiming directly at younger fans it is dobtful that they know who Yokozuna is, never mind Mil Mascaras. This was solid year with Ron Simmons, Yokozuna, Mil Mascaras, The Four Horsemen, Mike Tyson and Edge. I'm still convinced that it was too soon for Edge and maybe with a little rehab and time off he could come back, like Shawn Michaels did, but he still definitely deserves to be in there.

As well as a few vignettes and the wonderful tag match from the beginning of the PPV there was very little in terms of Mania nostalgia or in terms of explaining who these people were on the PPV and why we should care about their matches. I would have included a great deal of stuff aboiut Rock and Cena and at least a recap into the whole story of Punk and Jericho. None of that is here, though we do get to see why Triple H and Undertaker are fighting... though I still have no idea.

The strangest thing is the inclusion of a number of The Rock clips and matche. This is not strange in itself as he was obviously a huge part of the PPV, but you would have thought they would be Mania moments from him, not random matches from Raw. It is just strange and feels like the left overs from the last Rock boxset that WWE just slotted here to use them.

Wrestlemania 28 to me was a great PPV with some dips up and down. It had some great matches and certainly the main event of Rock/Cena met my expectations and as I say even exceeded them. I enjoyed the PPV and though there's very little that I may rewatch, there's certainly things that if you are a WWE fan will enjoy.
