Review for Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode 3

    8 / 10

Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode 3 is (as you can guess) the third episode of the show dedicated to the Star Wars series. I thought after the second one they may have moved onto another target such as James Bond or Indiana Jones, but it seems they feel there is still more ground to mine in the films.

This one, much like the last one is a little hit and miss and many of the jokes will be funny depending on how much of a Star Wars geek you are. Jokes about a lazy droid having a 'bad motivator' or some of the more random characters that never got much love in the films, the Robot Chicken team decided to dedicate more time to them.

Sketches also include Darth Vader trying to go to the toilet in his new suit, Padme putting on a lapdance/Flashdance show for Anakin, C3PO in a Spanish class 'Si 3PO' and Luke bumping into the Wampa whose having a few problems with just the one arm.

Emperor Palpatine makes multiple appearances including a hilarious escalator ride, a look at his life. It also follows the story of Stormtrooper Gary who seems to get into all sorts of scrapes such having to drive the Death Star, hitting an Ewok with a speederbike with awful, gruesome consequences.

Special Features include numerous featurettes following the creation of the show, these are nice showing the hard work and the love of Star Wars that went into making it. Commentaries and Chicken Nuggets which are funny and go through each sketch and so if there are any characters or references you didn't get this would clear up the joke. An interview with The Robot Chicken creators and George Lucas is interesting, as is the premiere at Skywalker Ranch. Gag Reel doesn't really work and I was expecting a Pixar-style fake outtakes from the show, but instead it's just the creators messing about.

There is also Thirty minutes of deleted scenes and animatics which for the most part you can understand why they didn't get passed the storyboard stage. However one sketch with Anakin meeting Padme in Episode Two was pretty funny and also one involving a fan encountering Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks) at a fan convention is funny, but I understand why they cut it.

Though I still think that Robot Chicken should turn their attention to another subject, I enjoyed the playful fun that was made out of the Star Wars Universe in this show. I think that is what makes the show so good. It spends its time making fun of its subject, but there is all made with a love for the subject and not out of hate. This is why it works so well and so if you are a fan of the show/ Star Wars or both, you will love this DVD.
