Review for WWE Over the Limit 2010

8 / 10

Of all the recent new names WWE have chosen for their PPVs, Over the Limit has to be the dumbest. The limit of what? It's a bizarre name for a pretty good PPV. Granted, it feels exactly like the last one with rematches between CM Punk and Rey Mysterio and John Cena and Batista, but this actually wasn't a bad PPV.

Intercontinental Championship Match
Drew McIntyre vs. Kofi Kingston
A good match. It's sad that Kofi still hasn't developed beyond the mid-card level. Drew is a great heel, but I just can't get into him until he develops a little more personality. A good match all in all, just sad that the actual title doesn't mean much these days.

Ted DiBiase vs. R-Truth
Am I seeing things? Is that the real Virgil? Really? Wow! That makes this match far more interesting. Both of these guys are great, not main eventers, which is sad as R-Truth was a World Champion in TNA and Dibiase was a main eventer when he was feuding with Randy Orton. This is a great match though and a good look at what the future of the WWE will look like.

S.E.S. Pledge vs. Hair Match
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk
I love CM Punk. He is one of my favourite wrestlers at the moment and even if he isn't in the main event, this storyline of his Straight Edge Society is such a great one that he doesn't need a belt or a title shot for it to work. This is absolutely match of the night. I knew it would be, though I wish they hadn't stopped the match part way to deal with a cut. This kind of took the momentum away from the match, but it was still a great match and certainly one of the best finishes I've seen in a good while.

Unified Tag Team Championship Match
The Hart Dynasty vs. Chris Jericho & The Miz
This is probably as good as tag team wrestling will get in 2010. That's not saying much. I love Miz and Jericho as a team and the Hart Dynasty are coming along fine. A good match, not exactly memorable, but good enough.

Randy Orton vs. Edge
What happened to these two? There was a time when they were the best the WWE had. I can't stand Orton as a face and Edge as a heel has become dull. Both can still put on a good match, but to be honest once it was over I could not remember a single thing from it.

World Heavyweight Championship Match
Jack Swagger vs. Big Show
The one time that I would have no problem with Big Show being the champion and this is the match it's in. Swagger is dull. He can't pull off the Kurt Angle persona he is obviously attempting to copy. Though the match 'ends' awful, I have to commend the Big Show for saving this from being an utter stinker.

WWE Divas Championship Match
Eve vs. Maryse
Speaking of 'utter stinkers'. Why don't they just give up on the women's division. Oh what's that? WWE have. Ok, that makes sense. When these two are the best the division has, you do wonder what is going on. Sure they look great and I'd never argue that. But it's pitiful matches like this which make me wish WWE would just go back to using divas as valets or backstage announcers. Awful match. Awful!

WWE Championship "I Quit" Match
John Cena vs. Batista
So awful was the last match, that it makes this match seem like a Five Star Classic. It isn't. It's not a bad match and of course the problem is that as neither are submission wrestlers it is essentially just a street fight that can only be won by saying 'I Quit'. This is a brutal match. I've seen much worse, but then I've seen much better too. Compared to the I Quit matches between Stone Cold and Bret Hart or The Rock and Mankind, this was a little dull, with the same typical spots that you see. However, it was exciting at times and certainly not a bad match. Though the finish… sheesh and I thought the duct tape from last month was dumb!

I'm delighted to say this PPV comes with special features. These are not just one backstage section, but multiple things including the Bret Hart vs. The Miz United States Championship match which was a surprise, some odd backstage footage of the Straight Edge Society and four commercials from Raw which are for the most part pretty funny. Granted this doesn't make the DVD a 'must have' item, but is certainly a step in the right direction. However with some great matches and some good segments throughout Over the Limit was a pretty good PPV and hopefully that continues in 2010.
