WWE Survivor Series 2009

7 / 10

After Wrestlemania, Survivor Series is the longest running PPV that WWE have. One of the original five, this PPV started by having an amazing concept of elimination tag matches and for those who enjoy tag team wrestling (like me) this was pure gold. Over the years, the PPV has moved away from these elimination matches with just a collection of matches and then the odd 'traditional' match here and there. This PPV includes three Survivor Series matches and three matches which is a nice compromise.

The feuds going into this event are not that great with only the Miz/Morrison one with a little fire behind it. However, this was quite a good PPV for WWE in 2009 and I haven't said that a lot.

Survivor Series Elimination Tag Match:

Team Miz (The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus and Jack Swagger) vs. Team Morrison (John Morrison, Matt Hardy, Evan Bourne, Shelton Benjamin and Finlay)

Apart from Finlay, you could dub this match 'The Future of WWE'. Almost every person on these teams seem to be just at the beginning of their career and watching future WWE Champion Sheamus here you can see why they decided to run with him. But looking at him against anyone in the ring only one thought hit me:  MY GOD HOW PALE IS SHEAMUS! This was a great match that wasn't too one-sided for one team and full of some great action.

Rey Mysterio vs. Batista

I hated this match. You want to know why? Because I am sick and bored of watching Rey Mysterio getting beaten up. I get it. He's an underdog, but I'm sick of it. I no longer care. There are those who admire his guts, but in mind all Mysterio does is stupid. Why watch a match with two or three moves of offence followed by him getting tossed around like a rag doll and the more I see him bounce off the middle rope the less amusing it becomes and more sad. It's like if I tried to wrestle Batista. Would people admire my guts and determination? No, they'd say I shouldn't be in the ring in the first place and that's how I feel when I watch Mysterio go up against anyone who is bigger than he is. Sadly, that's about 99.9% of the WWE. This match wasn't entertaining; it was the same carbon copy of every Mysterio vs. A Big Man match I have ever seen.

Survivor Series Elimination Tag Match:

Team Kingston (Kofi Kingston, MVP, Mark Henry, Christian and R-Truth) vs. Team Orton (Randy Orton, CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Ted Dibiase and William Regal)

I enjoyed this match a lot more than I thought I would and I think I know the reasons: CM Punk and Kofi Kingston. Both are great at what they do in the ring and the fact is, halfway through you forget that the feud is between Kofi and Orton. I couldn't care less about that feud, but this one was a great back and forth when they were in the ring. It's odd that I'm not talking about World Champion Kofi Kingston, but this is certainly a great step forward and hopefully 2010 will be his year to do this.

World Heavyweight Championship

The Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho vs. Big Show

Why did they not make this an elimination match too? This match could have been awful. In fact, I expected nothing less than this match to be a lumbering mess, but the storyline going into this with tag champs Jericho and Show vs. Undertaker was a great dynamic. The action within this match was perfect and the back and forth between all three was amazing and that ending was just from out of nowhere.

Survivor Series Elimination Tag Match:

Team Mickie (Mickie James, Eve Torres, Kelly Kelly, Melina and Gail Kim) vs. Team Michelle (Michelle McCool, Jillian Hall, Beth Phoenix, Layla and Alicia Fox)

Eyecandy. That's all you need to know. I wish I could say this was a great match and some wonderful wrestling, but I can't. This is an embarrassment to women's wrestling, but really if you were expecting anything less then you have never watched a Diva's match in WWE for the past year or so.

WWE Championship

John Cena vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels

Again, would it have been so difficult to make this an elimination match? The fact that Triple H and Shawn Michaels came down to the DX music was an interesting thought as it made you wonder would their teamwork and friendship implode as Jericho and Big Show's had? How can Matt Striker describe John Cena as 'The most controversial'? Based on what? This was a typical Cena dominated/ Superman match and though I enjoyed parts of it, I felt like I had watched this match many, many, many times before. It was the same spots and to be honest because of the previous triple threat, it meant that all the clever spots had already been used and this is why having more than one match with the same stipulation never works.

Survivor Series 2009 was a good PPV, but not a great one, the Divas match was an embarrassment, the Batista/Mysterio match was shockingly appalling and the two title matches were average at best. Where this PPV excelled was in the Survivor Series matches. Odd that, the best thing about the PPV was the original concept matches? The phrase 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' comes to mind.
