Blitzed my way through the Hartnell episodes, and I wasn't really impressed. It was the case of the monsters and the companions being more interesting than title character, and the stories following a formula of characters being captured and escaping several times during a story.

But now I'm watching the Patrick Troughton stories and he is brilliant, actually recognisable as the Doctor as we know them now. A far better actor than Hartnell, he delivers a complex, multi-faceted character that owns the screen, and the stories really do live up to that quality. I can understand now why so many people cite Troughton as their favourite Doctor. It's also a crime that so many of the second Doctor stories got wiped by the BBC.

Just saw, and loved The Enemy of the World, where he has a double role as a Mexican dictator (the accent is wholly believable), and am now working my way through The Web of Fear, which was my favourite Target novelisation as a kid.

I enjoyed the fantasy styled Christmas special and really liked the new Doctor and his assistant. Looking forward to the new series, and I wonder if it will be more fantasy rather than sifi, or a mixture of both. as long as the stories are good I do not mind.

Doctor Who star Millie Gibson to be β€˜replaced’ as Doctor’s companion after one season (yahoo.com)

And she was the only reason worth watching this latest incarnation... so I hope its not true?

It's not as if single-season companions are rare... Martha, Donna, Bill Potts, John Bishop's character. As long as she gets a good story arc and doesn't oustay her narrative (Clara Oswald)...

That's a pity Millie Gibson is written out after first season, she looks like being a very good companion going by the Christmas special. I wonder why they did that?

well I would imagine the story arc was written before the companion was even cast??
