Microsoft announces AI key on Windows 11 PCs

If the Windows Key wasn't enough...

I hope they start selling new PCs with keypullers. I'm already PO'd pressing Netflix buttons on my TV remotes by mistake. This would drive me nuts.

I'm no Bandicoot, but i have absolutely no trust in any form of AI whatsoever, so no, I will not be deliberately installing it in anything I possess. In fact, the gusto & enthusiasm with which AI in its many forms is being embraced is frankly terrifying.

at work we have to do various on line training courses, anti money laundering, diversity (seemed to boil down to be nice to everyone and don't be a dick, which seemed kind of obvious) and a recent one was on use of AI, what you can, cannot use it for, what you can cannot put into it etc.

I've never used it in my role, haven't seen the need, but some of the examples it gave of when/how you could use it were mind boggling - takes the whole google then copy and pasting rather than do the work yourself to a whole new level!

I came to the conclusion it was best to carry on not using it for work

Hopefully you'll trust the drugs it will have created in the future to cure some ailment or other though....
It is astonishing and absolutely terrifying at the same time.
I've done some messing it about with it for sure, such as:

  • doing me a 5 day itinerary for Dubai.  Scarily good and you can just 'talk' to it and make tweaks like 'I'd prefer to do something a bit more xxx on the Wednesday afternoon.' and it just understands context and everything and gets on with it instantly.
  • painting me a picture of whatever I ask.
  • solve a maths/physics problem
For example, I just said now as a test to 'paint me a picture of the Liverpool skyline in an impressionist style'.  This is what it did.

Think for a moment what's happened here.  It's understood what the key points are, what is Liverpool, the key points of the skyline and what an art style is and how to apply it.  5 minutes ago this image didn't exist..
As I said [EDIT, just noticed Pete did too!], terrifying..

We probably need a thread on AI.  Maybe I'll ask it to create one.

in these applications, I generally don't have a problem with it. For example, if you've read my short story 'Bleeding', I tried to get an image generator to create storyboards, just out of interest. Unfortunately the site I used took a lot of nuanced tweaking in the description to get even close. This is what it came up with for the opening scene

Which is close enough. I'm just not a fan of someone happily allowing AI to make life-changing decisions.

There was a case recently where an AI bot was asked to complete a set of tasks on a system that was safe-guarded by Captcha. The bot farmed the job out to a human by pretending to be visually impaired

And that was only reported on last March. If you think about the smaller details in the hows and whys of how the bot was able to complete the task (knowing/learning about visual impairment, knowing/learning about services provided, and then acting on that new info ina  ways that's bordering on organic. I repeat, terrifying.

Non-life changing for some is life changing for others though.
Some may be OK with it 'just' making art but the artists who have trained for years and suddenly have no work as AI is creating the games covers or whatever won't be.
I just remembered another thing AI did for me - write some Python code that I just couldn't get right.  Yep, it did it first time.  So coders too...

The chat gpt south park episode is worth a watch, written about chat gpt, using chat gpt, and hits the nail on the head!

Yes, I believe a whole bunch of actors were a bit p***ed off over that very concept a few weeks ago

It would be interesting to play the same game with things like.

Prove there's no such thing as global warming

Prove the last Presidential election was fixed and Trump won.

...and many others I could think of.

I know I could do that myself but it's a rabbit hole I'm not going down right now.
