Monitor problem.

richardbradley66 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 24th August 2008, 11:11

Every time I boot up my pc.......the monitor switches on for about 1 second so I can see it booting, then the picture dissappears. Its NOT a connection problem cos the blue light stays on the whole time and yet the picture doesnt come back on. If I switch it on and off at the on-off(!) button.....then it does the same thing everytime.......allows me to see my desktop for about 1 second then the pic dissappears again. Again, the power button is on the whole time.....it never evens flickers. All the connectors are in perfectly......I just cant work out whats up with it....any ideas?

Sounds very odd.

Do you have access to any other PCs or a laptop perhaps that you can plug the monitor into? (Just to ensure it isn`t the graphics card causing the problem - although it doesn`t sound like it).

Yeah, it is odd Miles........If it was a connection problem, I would see it goin to standby......if it were a pc problem, then it wouldnt boot up but it does! I havent got access to another as everyone has laptops at work but not at home(so they say!)!! Its a weird problem cos the way I see it is that the monitor DOES work......Its only for that 1 second, but its a perfect picture. It does NOT go on standby......It looks as if its still on but its not.........then if i press the on off switch, it goes off......switch it back on, I can see the screen for 1 second and the same again!! Bizzarre.

I think I need to find another pc as you say so I can test this out.

Hi

It could be your video drivers. Boot it into safe mode and see if the monitor stays on.

Cheers

Thanks Nick........trouble is, when i start up the pc.......it brings up the "windows" loading screen with the loading bar scrolling but then the screen goes off so I cant access anything on the desktop to put in into safe mode......its a real bummer.

So the monitor stops working when Windows starts booting? Or before, during the BIOS checks?

If you need to get into safe mode to check if it is the drivers, then you can press F8 just before Windows starts booting (after the BIOS checks), and you should be presented with a menu to choose safe mode from.

Sounds like some of the ones we had at work. the backlight would come on far a second then die. New monitors for us.

Yes, it brings up the bios checks.....then dissappears then brings up the windows screen with the loading bar scrolling across then dissappears again, then does another split second where you see the desktop then dissappears again.....its very weird.....perhaps as the above poster says, its time for a new monitor. :( I will try an sort this (try pressing F8) but its at my friends now so I cant check now. He said on the phone he cant work out whats up with it either!

As MilesR stated:

press F8 just before Windows starts booting

Then select VGA mode, from there you will get low resolution graphics & windows messages telling you that you are set on a low graphics resolution.

Go into Desktop properties then set screen to 1024x768, set monitor frequency to 60Hz & all should be normal from that point on.
