XBMC Eden

howdy...

looks like Eden will be released officially fairly soon.

i`m very interested in the "Live" style deployment, so that i can keep my
revo running like a set top box (i.e. no need to worry about command line
stuff, just boot directly to the media centre).

anyone else thinking of upgrading, or have already upgraded to one of
the beta`s?

I`m still running 10.  My Revo is connected to the TV and the Home Cinema.  I use that for all films but things like TV series I just watch through the TV speakers.  i.e. sometimes through HDMI and others through optical.  The normal xbmc doesn`t allow the sound through both at the same time and you need to select which output you need.  I use an addon that allows both so I either turn the TV down for movies or up for TV series.  Sadly the addon doesn`t yet work for Eden so until it does I won`t be changing..  The addon is a dual output but nobody really uses it for that as there is a tiny delay between the outputs.  The delay is the reason given for xbmc not doing the `dual` output natively - even though people only really want a quick way to switch.....
Sell it to me though, what else does it do?....

I haven`t updated since originally installed (haven`t bought the bloody remote you linked yet either).

Mainly because I`m lazy and it all works so well as it is.

I don`t really understand what the difference is from XBMC Live to be honest from what I`ve just read.

more of the same by the look of it, albeit with the added bonus of being able to tweak
more settings under the hood. tbh, that`s one thing that narked me a little with my live
(straight to hdd) installation, once it had installed, it`s very difficult to change network
settings... you need to have knowledge of command line stuff.

hopefully, eden will hide the OS gubbins, but allow some kind of GUI to make tweaks.
not a big deal for those who run xbmc on top of linux or windows, but for those of us
who don`t, it *should* make life a little easier when changes need to be made.

okies...

looks like XBMC LIVE (ver 10.0 iirc) is finally in need of upgrading.

switched on over the weekend to be confronted by a looping splash
screen and an "x" mouse pointer. removing various cables resulted in
it working when disconnected from my network.... not ideal as my
media is stashed on two NAS boxes :/

looking at the xbmc forum, someone has a very similar experience which
turned out to be a broken link with the weather feature... editing the hosts
file is a temporary fix apparently. might try it tonight.

failing that, it would appear that a software upgrade is on the cards to
run the latest build.

That's mad I had the exact same problem, but it was the same day that Katie had been dusting in and around everything and thought my Revo was on the way out.

Bizarelly though I couldn't stream through the NAS to the TV or the PS3 either so had to reboot everything.

I couldn't work out why the Revo and NAS would be playing up with different problems, which should be unrelated.

After rebooting the NAS everything else worked except the Revo.

Just didn't get around to trying the Revo again until Saturday when it worked again and I just thought, ah well seems to have sorted itself and hopefully will survive a while longer.

that's pretty much what mine did... randomly work, then not at all.
sorry mate, but i think you'll have to perform the upgrade sooner
or later. it'll be interesting to see if Ste (sj) has had similar issues too.

anyway, installed the latest "frodo" version in the same manner as my
previous xbmclive installation i.e. no other OS on the revo's HDD.

all seems well, and seems to run a bit quicker between menu's etc.

so, so far, so good :)

No problems here.  Windows 7 install though - and still on 11 (due to needing dual audio output).

good to hear it Ste.

forgot yours was ver. 11

you should probably be ok for a while longer.

iirc, wasn't Dharma (ver. 10) from around 2009?
