backing up from freeview recorder

cirdan (Elite) posted this on Friday, 21st August 2009, 22:52

we have an 80gb digihome freeview recorder. most of the time we just delete after watching, but we have a few things that we would like to keep. i was going to see about getting a cheap dvd recorder, but when i looked in the guide it had a connection at the back called rs 232. i dont now anything about this except when i googled, and saw what the cable looked like.

is there anything i can use to transfer from the freeview box? a laptop/external HD or am i best looking at a dvd recorder? cheers.

Buy yourself a n HDD/DVD Recorder with Freeview. You can always transfer recordings (in real time by playing them back) via standard SCART to the new recorder, and of course in future when you record something to the new hard drive recorder, it`s a job of minutes to archive to DVD+R.

The RS232 socket on the back of that recorder is a standard serial computer interface (it predated USB) and some manufacturers use them for updating the machine`s firmware - not a job for an end user - so ignore it. It doesn`t do anything useful.

It is possible to dig the hard drive out of a Digihome, but transferring files is massively complicated and only to be taken on by somebody who really really knows what they`re doing. I`ve never tried it, and I consider myself moderately tech-savvy. I don`t use those Digihome/ Digifusion type recorders any more specifically because archiving recordings is such a bind. I have a Sony HDD/DVD recorder that was a little pricey but makes recording and archiving programmes a doddle.

I have a Digifusion PVR. It has 2 scart sockets on the back. I also have a Panasonic Freeview DVD recorder. Normally if I watch something I want to archive I record it on the Panasonic, but sometimes I archive from the Digifusion using a scart from the Digifusion to the Panasonic.

We have a digihome in our bedroom and archive stuff to dvdr by connecting the red, white & yellow cable to the dvd recorder`s in connections to the out connections on the digihome pvr.

thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

i thought the connection might be for something like that, but i wasn`t sure. a relative has the Sony hard drive/recorder, has had for a while, and if we were going to get a new one it would be one like that. from what i have seen its very good.

but to be honest we are happy for the time being with our recorder, for what it cost it`s been pretty good, a few problems aside. i can get hold of a dvd recorder so i think i will give that a go as we would only need it occasionally.

thanks again.
