pc dvd rom lockup on region 1

as the heading suggests my dvd rom drive has locked on region 1 in the firmware and not even dvd genie can unlock it.
it is a samsung 612s
is there anyway to unlock it or do i need a new dvd drive?
any help would be much appreciated
