Page 1 of DVD to VHS

Can anyone help?
Is it possible to record from a DVD onto a VHS tape.
I know it`s normally VHS to DVD but I need to see if it can be done the other way round.

ok. If it`s a DVD movie you`ll need to disable the copy protection known as macrovsion .My DVD player has macrovison disabled, you`ll need a player or special scart cable than can do this. It`s just a case then of plugging the scart from the DVD player into the VHS and "dubbing" the movie across. If it`s a pre ripped movie or home made dvd, macro may be off it already and you can use a normal scart cable.

You may need a scart with in/out switching if your VHS or DVD player doesn`t have an output. or input or whatever.. :) anyway, you can get one here I use one for VHS to PC connections for getting my tapes onto DVD. You may not need it, but you never know..

Yes, it`s possible. Un-protected content only of course, unless you possess a machine with macrovision disabled or a Macromaster SCART lead.

In the early days of DVD, I regularly found myself copying a DVD to VHS so that a family member could watch it, as they didn`t yet have a DVD player. Haven`t needed to do it for years now though.

wow.. this brings back memories!.. I had a philips 751 for watching DVDs and some cheapo (when I say cheapo it was £75) from tesco that allowed macrovision to be switched off...

haven`t had to do it for years though.. and I don`t even have a vcr anymore

Thanks for your advice. Is it possible to transfer from DVD to VHS if the DVD and video recorder are combined i.e. in the same unit?

ONLY if the DVD is not copy protected. Copy protection (macrovision) cannot be disabled internally in a combo unit.

All non-protected DVDs will happily copy across, so home videos etc, no problemo.

Thanks once again for all the advice but I still can`t fathom this out. I have a Samsung DVD/Video combined and it seems to me that if the DVD player is running then the VCR part will not and vice versa or am I comletely missing the point. I`m very new to all this so answers in words of one syllable would be appreciated.

I don`t know that particular machine, but usually there is one button to press called "Dub". What did you do with the instruction book?

If you`re recording for a family member who doesn`t have a DVD player, might be less fuss just to buy them a cheapy player (in the Metro yesterday there was an article about one for £9!!) and run off a DVD copy.

Yes I have the instruction book but I live in Spain and the instructions are in Spanish and as far as I can make out there is no facility for doing this. There is certainly no "Dub" button.
Family member needs the VHS copy for his work.
