32`` Widescreen Telly for £299

Fecker (Competent) posted this on Monday, 28th May 2001, 12:08

I spotted a 32" widescreen in Sainsbury the other days for £299.
That`s got to be the cheapest available. OK it is an Amstrad (!) but I doubt they make the tube - probably Phillips or Mitsubishi sourced like everything else.
Now I just need to flog my 28"..........

Yes good VFM, butdon`t be surprised if it goes faulty in less than a year..

"You gets what you pay for"

Anyway, now is not a good time to be buying a TV. Wait a year and IDTVs (DVB) will be the norm.

I can`t understand why anybody would want to buy a WS analogue TV, it just doesn`t make sense.

The analogue signal won`t be switched off for a good few years yet, so it is still worth buying a cheapo widescreen telly now, especially while prices tumble.

However, as Kevo points out, DVB will soon become the norm, and I think we can expect the price of analogue sets to drop as we get nearer to a switch off date.

But analogue tellies won`t be obsolete - that`s what set top boxes are for !

True what you about STBs, however I would still rather have it intergrated and be able to see the `basic channels` for free rather than paying a subscription just to see them through a STB

IDTV? DVB? STB?

Pinch me if I am hallucinating here, but arent these diseases?

Anyway, what difference does it make what kind of TV you buy? Surely it is the source that is important?

Hmm.

idtv - integrated digital tv

- analogue tv is fine if you use sky - the only draw back is that you dont get itv on sky.

but Amstrad - hmmm PANTS!

Once you get used to WS broadcasts and the clarity of digital TV then 4:3 anaolgue just don`t cut the yellow stuff anymore.

When my cable STB is tied up when i`m recording something then it`s a real downer when I want to watch the other side (analogue).

So, I`m not prepared to fork out for another STB and besides my TV has only one RGB SCART so I will lose out there too.

So the next TV I buy MUST have DVB. Nothing less will do.

Too right, Kevo. Somehow analogue telly just don`t cut the mustard any more.

They`ve really gotta give this taping scenario some serious thought. If DVB will allow you to watch one digital channel while recording another, fantastic. But as it stands at the moment this is one facility that is sadly lacking. Perhaps PVR (eg Tivo) will become the norm for us all.

As for not being able to watch ITV on Sky, that will continue to remain a problem whilst the companies are failing to talk. At the moment there is a major stand-off between the two, and I`m just amazed that Sky are still franchising part of their network to onDigital (or ITV Digital as it`s about to become known as).

I have to say that my onD facilities have been second to none, although I wonder if ntl or Telewest may be the best way to go - at least you get the best of both worlds, plus Front Row to boot.

It`ll be interesting to see whether ITV Digital franchise their new sports channel, called imaginitively The Sports Channel, to Sky subscribers. I think some form of Government intervention will be called for, if they are as committed to digital TV as they say they are. The fact that ITV ain`t on Sky is, quite frankly, ridiculous, and needs sorting out sooner rather than later.

Bloomin` media head honchos - no idea what the paying customer actually wants, as per usual...

I wrote to the office of fair trading about 6 months ago pointing out that ITV/on digital were attempting to gain an unfair competitive advantage over SKY by not putting ITV onto satelite. The response was that this had just been ruled on and they had decided in ITV`s favour because SKY are the dominate player - ie. on digital`s lack of success means ITV aren`t going to be compelled to put themselves onto SKY!

but about 3 months ago ITV announced that they are currently in negotiations to get their channels onto SKY and it should happen in around 2002. this was before they decided to rebrand On digital as `ITV digital` (which is due to the ITV brand being a stronger brand to On digital).

I think digital tellys are overpriced. I`ll be buying a projector as soon as I get a bigger house!
