Job advice please

Gavski (Elite) posted this on Friday, 9th October 2015, 13:17

As you may remember after relocating to the south east I have been job hunting for the past three months. An ultimately soul destroying experience.

Finally more interviews are coming in and this week alone I have had 6 interviews (a combination of first interviews, seconds and even a third round)

Now here's the dilemma:

I think (and this could be jumping the gun) I am about to be offered a job.
Now this is brilliant news on the whole, but...

I have a second interview for another job on Monday, this one pays a great deal more and is a ten minute walk away from where I live. It is, however, a contract.

The first job is 15 miles away, and less pay.

The agency representing me on the better paid job seem confident that this is a formality and I should be offered the position.

I've just had a missed call from the first job. What do I do??
Try and delay them if they are offering me a job? Take it? Or turn it down and wait to see if I get the contract?

This is stressing me out even more than not having a job!

I look forward to the feedback!

The only advice I can give is to go with your gut feeling as to which would be the most rewarding of the two.

I had similar situation in the past when contracting where I jumped ship from a comfortable, relatively low paying job into a far better paid job and hated every minute of it. That experience alone was enough to teach me that money isn't everything.

I went perm about four years ago for various reasons, on a lot less than I was earning on contract. I've just been promoted for a second time and I'm now earning close to what I was on in my last contract job (albeit without the tax savings). I guess my point is, go for whichever job you think will make you the happiest, not the richest, as you can always work your way up. Conversely, if you're only taking this first job to have a job, you might as well hang on for the second one.

There are ways to delay taking the first job, till you find out about the second. But do not make it look deliberately that you are using delaying tactics. One tactic you can use is having a urgent family crisis you have to deal with, etc.

Only problem is if you get a delay in reply to the second job, to know if you have got it or not. That's when it gets messy and you end up with no job.

Good luck.

Most employers will see right through that tactic. I'm interviewing at the moment and that would set alarm bells ringing (as in the person is holding out for another job).

That's the issue I think my head Bandi. You get these opportunities and then at the end of it you have none!

They have indeed called and offered the job. But. They have under offered too, by 10% less than my minimum. (they said I have gaps in my experience they would need to train me on).

I'm not a young man any longer so whilst I'd like to learn I don't feel I have a huge amount of time to be in a "junior" position. This is one is a small company and I really can't see there would be promotion whilst there.

I've told them that I will let them know by Monday evening. (this is all being done through an agency BTW)

With the pay drop offered the job just down the road would now be equal to twice the pay. (albeit contract) and no travel costs at all.

I know i've probably answered all my own questions here, but the second job is by no means foregone conclusion and I could be left with nothing.

Can you not take the first job and go to the interview for the second job anyway? You might not want the second, so going there might just make you sure about taking the first.

Thanks chaps.

I delayed the first company and said I would let them know after the interview yesterday. However, as I suspected the second company wouldn't make a decision there and then!

Anyway - just had a call to tell me I have the job. :)

I think there was a serendipitous moment before the interview yesterday. Although it's a ten minute walk away from me I did actually drive (I needed to go to the supermarket afterwards) my car maintenance light came on, meaning to me work will need to be done soon on it! So with no car driving required for the second company I took this as a sign.

Now I just need to call the first company to tell them no! I think i'll make it clear I would have said yes straight away if they hadn't offered under!
