Inside the Dark Web

Horizon program on net security and how it affects us.

Not sure it's going to change anything I do or the way I do it but interesting none the less.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

it's interesting, but scary at times.

some ppl at work don't use adblock, and were surprised when adverts for our company appeared when browsing the web, I guess when they've been looking at clients, competitors, products related to what we do, it's come back to us.

Much like the facebook adverts at the side, where they use your age, gender etc to guess what adverts they should target at you.

I actually don't mind too much if advertisers are trying to serve ads that might interest me. That part of me being tracked I have no real problem with.

Generally I don't even mind large computer systems to which I'm essentially just an anonymous ID looking at what I do. Like bank systems keeping an eye on my spending to see if my card details have been stolen.

Governments on the other hand, suddenly I start to mistrust what they want to know about me for. Especially when there are people in them who are more concerned about terrorism, than locking up (and sometimes even shooting) innocent people. And even more people with outside business interests, who equate humming a well known tune with copyright theft.

Not seen the Horizon programme, but here is a scenario I can imagine happening with the amount of data our security agencies want to just hoover up...

An individual (say a journalist) uncovers some dirty deed a politician is involved in, or is critical of some new anti-terror legislation. Someone in the security services checks what information they have on this individual and finds they have evidence they downloaded a bunch of copyrighted movies or games illegally, maybe browsed some escort sites (and is married), or any manner of things. Said security service passes information to politician, who threatens individual into silence.

I'm not saying we are there right now, although it wouldn't surprise me if something like this hasn't gone on, but it's the rocky road you head down whenever you give governments the tools to suppress their populace. It always starts out innocently enough.

EDIT: Rest of this post removed due to threats by a government agency who discovered my obsession with Hello Kitty

Or maybe threatens prosecution for rape on charges in another, more convienient country.

If you wait until it affects your comfort zone there maybe nobody left to side with you.
