Scrapping an old car

RJS (undefined) posted this on Friday, 14th June 2013, 12:10

Has anyone got any experience of scrapping a car? It's not worth anything, but the engine might to someone and the alloys are in good condition (and quite unusual).

So rather than take it to We Buy Any Car or something similar for the inevitable £50 they'd offer for it, I wonder if it is worth selling the wheels/engine and any other bits of value and then scrapping the rest?

Depends how desperate you are for money.  It`s got hassle written all over it to me! :)

Just ask my 2001 Astra which has been on my parents drive for the last 3 years!

I`ve scrapped loads of cars in my time. You can take it to a reputable place intact (with the owner`s log or they won`t touch it) and they`ll give you a blanket price (down here it varies from £50 to £100 d3eepending on model)

If you`d rather some of the car was salvaged then put it up on AutoTrader for spares or repair/sold as seen. Mind you, watch your back with AT, you get some right dodgy bleeders calling up sometimes. Either that or advertise it in your local rag for the same

Mum got £160 scrap value from the local breakers yard for her toyota in April, so unless you particularly want the car to "live on" through parts, I would personally go down that route simply because it was so easy and a reasonable price :)

make sure you take it to and authorised ATF/ELV and that a COD is issued, return the V5(c) slip to DVLA, you never know if you don`t, you may then start getting tickets for it!  Should get £100-£200 scrap depending on make etc, if its an audi and aluminium shell then worth more than a fiat made of tin!

Or break and sell on fleabay if you have the time and can patience...

Yes, just ring a few local metal recyclers and they will give you a price over the phone, scrap metal is around £120 a ton so you may be surprised at what you get.

What is the car out of interest?

Just put a deposit down on a new one, will be picking it up Saturday. The trader recommended putting my old one on ebay, but to expect lots of stupid questions and time wasters.

I might do that, put the whole thing up instead of scrap it. Though if I got what Fluff's mum did for hers I'd be happy.

There is a model around the K reg, can for the life of me remember what it is, that the ECU in a Beemer is worth more than scrapping the car.
This was from a guy scrapping his (on a K plate) a couple of years ago trying to sell it on before it got whacked as it was apparently in cracking nick but the ECU had a fault and was going to cost around £1000-1500 for a 2nd hand replacement as they were like gold dust!

Might not be your model but if ya got a few forums or whatever you can ask on.....?

Why ya scrapping it out of interest? (ie: just the new purchase or is it falling apart?)

That's very kind of you, here we go!

1995 BMW 320i Touring SE
Currently situated in NE London (near Chingford)
107k mileage
MOT due in September
Taxed until end of July
3 owners (first was the BMW dealer, second was someone who knew my uncle, I'm the third and have had it for the longest!)

What's wrong with it (that I know about):

Body work has a few spots where it looks like it is starting to rust, may be superficial I don't know. Front right mud guard has rusted and fallen off, but I still have that. Wing mirrors have enjoyed the odd scrape, some plant induced scratches down the sides, usual sort of things for an 18yr old car.

Rubber bit that sits below the wipers on the front windscreen is cracking. Rubber around the driver side window sits inside the glass when it should sit over it, despite that never had a leak ever.

Instrument cluster prone to dying occasionally and then coming back when it feels like.

Central locking intermittently works on the passenger and rear doors, they unlock when they feel like it, mostly when it's warm.

Opening the passenger driver side door causes the driver side electric window to go up, other than this bizarre and fun safety issue, the electric windows all work perfectly.

Some bulbs out on the dashboard.

In the last week it has decided to not fire on all 6 cylinders, makes a nice putt-putt sound out of the exhaust now and seems to have lost performance.

Glove compartment door hinges broken, likes to fall off when you open it.

Odd bit of internal trim (like the covers for the seatbelt bolts at the top) missing, one of the passenger door handle plastic surrounds keeps falling off despite being completely in-tact, perhaps I'm just not very good at putting it on properly.

One alarm key fob has run out of batteries, both have tape over them.

Climate control broke years ago, re-gassing didn't fix it either, probably a crack in a part that needs replacing.

I think that's it, but there might be something minor I've forgotten.

What's good with it:

Five wheels, four uncommon alloys in amazing condition considering the age, four wheels which do not need replacing anytime soon, and a spare in the boot which has only ever been used once to move the car from the back drive to the front car port.

All original manuals, fully traceable history, two sets of keys, until a cylinder (or two) went missing this June, engine was still gloriously happy and purring like a kitten. Never had cooling issues, ever.

Recently had front brakes and handbrake repaired, with various related bits replaced.

Rear struts for the boot were replaced a few years ago so that won't come down on anyone's head.

In fact, pretty much everything that isn't bad with it is pretty good!

Piccies:

Will take some of the interior when I've hoovered it!

Alas not. :(

Because the last few years it keeps costing me a few hundred quid every MOT. :/ Nothing that any mechanic can't deal with easily, but it's next MOT is September and in the last 3 weeks I've had the front left brake stick on, the heat shield underneath the car come loose, the handbrake collapse (ironically on the way to the garage to have the heat shield fixed! it went DOING!)

If I wasn't going on holiday in it this week I'd probably have decided against spending the £560 on getting all that done and given up there and then. :/

Whilst on hols it decided to (at least I think this is what has happened) let one or two of the cylinders (it's 6 cyl) have a rest, so whilst it still goes okay it doesn't exactly have the performance it should have, and when idling it sort of putt-putts a bit.
