Payment advice for selling a car on Ebay

Superted (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 31st August 2008, 08:22

Hi everyone, as the title says I am thinking of selling my car on Ebay, I have spent all morning reading up on it and think I`ve got it sorted but am a bit concerned about payment methods.

Just wondered what is the best option, how much will I get charged etc?

At the moment I am thinking that a bankers draft or cash on collection would be best, but then I am worried it could be a forged draft or notes.

So then could PayPal be the best option, but I am worried about getting charged a fortune for the transaction.

What do you think would be best or reasonable to ask of the buyer?

I`ve tried looking at other peoples auctions to see what they ask but they don`t realy mention payment.

In case anyone is interested it is a 2003 1.8 Mondeo Zetec in metallic silver.

All the best

Gerald.

If I was selling a car (by any method) I`d accept cash or bank transfer if they wanted to take it away immediately. I`d accept banker`s draft but not let them take the car till I`d paid it in.

Out of all the methods, bank transfer would be safest IMHO.

My only concern with a bank transfer is having to give a stranger my bank details, but then I suppose you do every time you set up a direct debit etc.

Still not sure, did find on Paypal they charge 2.9% based on the car selling for around £3,000. :(

All the best

I did a Bankers Transfer when I sold mine - they posted it to me then when cleared they came to collect - I also got them to sign the auction page (that I had printed off) saying that they had collected the vehicle.

Bank Transfer if your safest option. Do NOT accept Paypal for a car (vehicles are the only thing where you don`t have to), you`ll get scammed.

Forgot that, yes, I usually write up a little receipt for them to sign saying sold as seen etc.

Or write them a cheque. Or use your debit card. There isn`t a lot someone can do with your account number and sort code...unless you`re Jeremy Clarkson... :D

I would ask for the cash to be paid at the time of collection. I would also look at their feedbacks. I would also ask for some I.D. ( e`g Utility Bill, Driving license Photo card as you can confirm the identity of the buyer) as you need to fill in the buyers details to be sent off to DVLA.
You can also state on the Ebay auction that all currency notes will be checked with a special pen, just to putoff the scammers.
Bankers Drafts can be forged, so be aware.

Cheers everyone, good point about the note detector, my mum has one of the UV light ones in her shop I could borrow.

This is what I have come up with as a disclaimer,

Viewing/Payment
I live in Cardiff so if you are nearby you are welcome to come and see the car before bidding, or if there are any areas you would like a closer look at please email me and I will happily take some photos and send them to you, the car is based in Roath (CF24) during the day and Llanishen (CF14) in the evenings and weekends.

Once the auction is complete please contact me to let me know your intended payment method and when you would like to collect the car, I would prefer cash on collection or bank transfer/bankers draft but would be happy to take a cheque.

If you wish to use Paypal you will pay the additional 2.9% fees incurred.

Remember the auction price is final, no haggling on collection, this is a private sale, the car will be sold as seen, there is no warrantee or refund on offer.
You will also need to bring your driving license to prove your address for the V5 documents. I will only release the car once your payment has cleared in full or been checked with a forged note detector in the case of cash.

What do you think?

All the best

Gerald.

I wouldn`t take a personal cheque.

not sure you can ask the buyer to cover your paypal fees on top of the auction price
