Can A Catholic Be the Prime Minster?

zrrifle (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 19th April 2005, 22:02

Bar room argument (one too many shandies I think). . .

We all agreed the constitution barred a member of the royal family marrying a catholic and that a catholic can never ascend to the throne however is there anything in the constitution that prohibits a catholic becoming prime minister?

Anybody know the definite answer and have a web link would be most appreciated? There`s a few pints resting on this one

P.S. an excellent reason for not drinking during the week!!!

The Prime Minister (Tony Blair, in case you`d forgotten :D ) IS a catholic.

ah no..I`m pretty sure that he isn`t a Catholic at the moment, but that his wife most defintitely IS. He is likely to become one on standing down as PM, otherwise the sex would dry up...probably.

Nah - I thought he wasn`t but was going to convert as soon as he`s finished a third term.

He`s not a catholic yet. His wife obviously is. there was talk late last year he was thinking of converting but as far as I`m aware thats never happened.

For those who say you can be is there a site to back it up? I thought there was nothing to stop you but the sites are full of the monarchy stuff skant little on the prime minster side.

Article here from the tail end of last year on speculation that TB was going to become a catholic , states that there is nothing to stop a catholic Prime Minister (although there has not been one yet) , but it could be a little bit of a `constitutional pain in the arse` :o :p

Blair is definitely not a Catholic.
A Catholic can definitely be PM.

The more important question is:-

Can a `less wealthy person` be a prime minister ?

Cause they are all well away from the reality of making a living on an average wage :p
