What`s the best and safest way to bury mains cable in a lawn ?

As above. I also know the new regs. are pretty restrictive, e.g. DIY frowned upon. Thanks ?

Less frowned upon, more illegal I`m afraid :( The regs cover anything in the kitchen, bathroom or outdoors - you can do small jobs in other rooms.

However, for your future reference, in response to your question, you should get armoured mains cable, and then dig a trench at least half a metre deep (the deeper the better) and then lay the armoured cable, and then backfill, and then lay some warning tape (it says `electrical cable below` or similar all over it) above the trench much nearer the top, so if someone else starts to dig there, they will find the tape before the cable. The turf will happily grow back over the top of this as long as it is about 7-10cm below the surfae. You could use normal mains cable in some kind ot trunking, but armoured cable is much much much better, and overall no more expensive. Not that you will be doing the work yourself of course.

EDIT : Screwfix sell a pre-wired solution, which you just have to bury! This bypasses the new regs, and allows you to install it perfectly legally - it is more expensive, but you save the cost of the sparky. Worth a look - Armadillo

When I needed power to my garden shed I made up a super-long extension lead from the garage and threaded the cable through an old length of hosepipe (the reinforced stuff) and buried along the edge of the lawn. Probably highly illegal now, it probably was then too. At least I know where the cable is, so can take care when working there. Still working today after ~6 years. The plug in the garage goes to an RCD plug adaptor thingamajig.

Sam.

You can find a few more details on underground cable runs here www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/7.13.3.htm
And as far as the part P regs go the work was done last year wasn`t it :D , That is as long as you know what you are doing and feel competent enough to complete the work safely otherwise pay for an electrician but I guess you know that anyway.
