Classified Adverts Forum ?

clayts (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 15th May 2001, 21:58

What started as a knockabout thread on the bargain bucket thread developed into some discussion about the merits of a Sales Forum of sorts.

This was an idea floated a while ago, but I think events overtook it.

So far Sammy, WPKenny, Rimc and JedtheNed have voted for it, with Kenny adding some concerns about how to stop junk postings - this would perhaps require more moderators for this particular forum.

Anyway, what do people think - aye or nay, and how do we stop the Arfur Daleys posting there ?

I would be all for a well moderated classified forum.
With people I can trust.

Not too sure about this. What are auctions for? Selling things should be done in auctions. They are more secure and trustworthy than forums. You have less chance of dodgy retailers/rip offs. Also some extrenal retailers pose as a user to advertise for free on this site. This is illegal and advertising should be done the properway

True - the mods will have to keep this trade free. If not possible, how about a swop shop?

Some useful contributions there, especially Di Canio`s - cheers mate.

A way round it could be to only offer the facility to people who have posted a random number of threads (say 100 ? maybe) so that most of the regulars are used to them.

Then if anything was a little bit suspect, moderators could check back on their posting history to ensure they made worthwhile postings.

Whaddya reckon to that idea then ? (Blimey, I`m at my most creative today - what`s come over me ?)

Hiya

This is the best site on the net,I come here everyday without fail just to read what people have put in the threads, sometimes I answer if I feel I have a valid point or on the odd occasion made a thread of my own.

If you think that a forum for adverts for members that have posted a minimun number of threads say 100 like above is fair , I dont, saying that I havnt got the same right as someone else because I havnt done enough threads or been here long enough because youd have to be here a while to do a 100 threads let alone a 100 replys to threads that are worthwhile and helpful. You are going to get all sorts of useless threads up just so people can advertise their dvds, because everyone knows this is a respected forum.

Time after time on here I have read people say if your selling second hand dvds go to ebay, people are paying more than they cost new, everyone that is a member of this site knows that second hand dvds arnt worth buying ,fair enough there are exceptions but they are few and far between

We all come here to find answers to our problems and to find that dvd that we need or in most cases the one u dont, but buy because it is a good deal I think having a forum for adverts would spoil that and maybe attract dodgy traders.
That is just my thought on this matter.

Samantha

hmm. im not too sure either. undoubtedly this is the best forum, far better than the dvd forums i think, which to me gets far too messy and silly! i just hope that if a sellers forum or whatever were to emerge this site wouldnt degenerate into something farcical....

Hi, just been informed of this thread since I`m am rarely on the net out of work hours.
I`m glad people have opinions on my suggestion. It is true that there are sites like ebay etc for selling DVD`s. That would be where the need for a moderator comes in. The idea of the forum would be that ALL posts are veto`d first. This would of course give a delay to the messages but ultimately it would be the job of a moderator or two to read the posts and decide which are legitimate sales from Joe Public and which are people`s businesses. The idea of a swap shop seems maybe more viable. The first point of contact would be the forums and after that, a private exchange of emails could take place for individuals to arrange things themselves. People are right in thinking there is a risk, but then ebay and the like carry risks too and as far as I know offer no compensation for failed sales (correct me if I am wrong on that one).
The real key is the veto`ing of ALL posts to the forum. I`m sure there are volunteers willing to do this, and with enough people (2? 3?) it could easily be done speedily 24/7. I would like to volunteer my services right now. People would soon learn that this is a site for true fans of DVD wishing to expand their veiwing pleasure rather than some quick cash fix for small time entrepaneurs (sp?) and that if people like that did attempt to post, their posting would never get passed.
This site already has a voting system in place for reviewers. Would it not be reasonably straight forward to set this up into a public opinion of people on the site who wish to trade? ie a reliability rating?
Once established, people would soon learn what goes and what doesn`t.

Clayts

You could allow people to do posts for their Yahoo or Ebay auctions, that way the terms and conditions of the auction site come into play. Otherwise I think it might get a bit messy the first time someone sells a duff / nicked piece of kit.... and this is such a friendly forum I`d hate it to get all fecked up.
