Violence in video games linked with aggression?

Oh yes it is!

Quote:
"Scientists have investigated the use of violent video games for more than two decades but to date, there is very limited research addressing whether violent video games cause people to commit acts of criminal violence," said Mark Appelbaum, PhD, task force chair. "However, the link between violence in video games and increased aggression in players is one of the most studied and best established in the field."

As has been the case with all of these studies that claim that video games "cause aggressive behavior" in players, researchers are not willing to make the leap of faith to claim that aggressive behavior leads to real-world violence.

Oh no it isn't!

Quote:
Stetson University psychology professor Chris Ferguson, one of the approximately 230 academics who signed the open letter to the APA reached out to us to share his concerns over the task force report. He identifies issues with the group conducting the research audit and its findings.

“As a researcher in this field, I thought you might be curious to know that there are actually a lot of problems with this report, how the task force was comprised, and the basis for its conclusions on research,” Ferguson told me. “Indeed, the evidence linking violent games to aggression is honestly a lot less clear than the APA report would have one believe. There are an increasing number of studies coming out now that suggest there is no link whatsoever. Further, the task force appeared to have been selected from among scholars with clear anti-media views (two had previously signed an amicus brief supporting attempts to regulate violent video games in the Brown v EMA 2011 Supreme Court case for instance).” That landmark case struck down California’s law prohibiting sales of certain games to minors. Games were deemed protected under the first and fourteenth amendments.

I remember a while ago a report went out to "prove" this. Their conclusion was that violent ppl tend to like violent games (and films) but they couldnt prove violent games and films leads to violence.

I have terrible hand writing but I'm not sure that makes a qualified MD ;)

Silly report, most video games are violent but not seen any spike in mass killings in the last 30 years or so...

I am not sure that there is a link to aggression,  but personally I do not liked the way video games are going, and the reason is gorry and bloody realism.

Your brain need to know what is a computer game and what is not. If you have a game that is too real, and the easy solution is to just kill in a situation, then it must have an effect on the brain, most likely the sub-concious.

Would this flow into the real world? well for most level headed persons it would not, but there could be a very small percentage that are affected by playing constant violent video games, and would extend into the real world.

Take for example a favorite game of mine over the years has been Tomb raider series from way back in the 90's, because not only do you get a great adventure but you get to see some nice pixels in front of you in the shape of Lara Croft. Some divorces  have resulted in this

I liked the whole series of games until Tomb raider 2013, where it went the same way as other newer games with totally realistic fights of blood, gore and even torture. Not good. I binned it

Up to then, you knew Tomb Raider was just a game, they were just game characters without the total realism of these new games. So that ended me playing or buying new Tomb raider games, or other such gorry games.

Maybe we should all go back to the golden days of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario brothers, where with the blur of colour we just had to worry about epileptic fits

Well her boobs got better looking in each new game, and that was the two good selling points of Lara Croft. Ha Ha.

I think if it wasn't for violent games, this friendly bbq would have stayed that way ;)
