Er, was the Gamecube #1 in its generation?
The quote is saying the the Gamecube was the most powerful console of the generation.. if power=sales, then Gamecube would have been the No 1 console.. which it wasn`t.

The Wii subsequently went and proved that again.

Aha, I completely misread what he said there! He is right, and actually all the points I made back him up when I was bringing them up to prove him wrong. :(

Not sure about that at all.  The GCN was very powerful at the time.
It`s difficult to define `power` though - some excel at certain things and others at different ones.
However, despite what they say, the Wii U does need to look superb graphically.  While it`s slightly unfair to compare a PS3 game to a Wii U one as the PS3 has been out years and the developers can now do some incredible things on it and the opposite with the Wii U, there`s nothing up to now (including ZombieU) looking close to a quality PS3 title.  And as said, once the other next gen ones come out it will look even more underpowered.
Developing AAA games is not cheap nowadays so I can also imaging some being quite reluctant to develop a game with a unique control system just for the Wii U.  Almost admitting as much by announcing a very PS3 looking control pad at E3?...  But as an add-on - so further splitting the userbase as it`s very rare (ever?) for a game to succeed when specifically developed for a non-bundled add-on.
There was nothing in the press conference that made me think I definitely want one `as soon as it`s out`.  Putting it on the floor while doing trampolining in Wii Fit so I can see the ground disappearing.. :/  Selecting weapons for Batman Arkham City (a game I did a year ago - so why would I pay 4 times the price to do it again??.......) :/
At £249 it`s not cheap enough to get the casual gamer to pick one up impulsively (which was a huuuuuuge factor in the Wii`s success).  It`s current;y looking like a console to pick up a year or so into its life - when the price has dropped and there`s a few decent games out for it.  Even if it`s just Mario and Zelda.. :)

It would be fantastic if the Wii/GC emulators continue to improve and become glitch free, because looking at some games in HD res with those is really amazing. Though some sort of backwards compatibility from the Wii U that did the same thing would be equally fab.

Anyway...

30th November is the EU release date:

US prices are £186 and £217.

At those prices it has a chance.  I don`t think it will be though..... esp. the `premium` one.  Nearer £250+ methinks??..

I imagine we`ll be looking at £199 for the basic, and £250 for the premium unit. Overpriced for me at those levels. I reckon that the 360 and PS3 will see a price drop when it launches, rendering the Wii U potentially struggling to get going.

I`m sure prices will fluctuate a fair bit once more companies announce it but Amazon are currently £249 and £299.  At that price a `fail`...  Premium one only available in black.  Basic one you need to have a Wii really as it doesn`t come with sensor bar etc.
Some really cool features still being announced though (TVii sounds good - but only announced for US.  Also I think you can play COD just on the controller.)
