Is GOODFELLAS the Greatest Mob Movie of all Time??? Discuss.............

NoveltyCondomHead (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 12th August 2004, 13:47

Ola Fellow WiseGuys!

I`ve just had the pleasure of delving into the Goodfellas:Special Edition - and i`ve got to tell you, that I think this is one of the greatest movies of all time. It certainly is bang at the top of my list.

I spent last night listening to Henry Hill`s Commentary and even today i`m shocked at the fact that most of the scenes are completely authentic. Listen to Henry crack up during the beginning scene when Tommy knifes Billy Batts with the Kitchen Blade - this is a man truly upset by the memories of hell.

It`s just thrown new light on the film - which was truly great and just blown it through the roof.

Even though Goodfellas is a great film, for me Casino is better both in terms of storyline and acting. Just my opinion though

I have to agree with NoveltyCondomHead on this one.

Goodfellas is one of the greatest movies ever made, as for Casino, its not a patch on fellas.

I`m not even really sure you can call it a "mob" film - Francis Coppola himself calls it a "story of family" - but if you can label it as such then Godfather II wins, hands down. ;)

My favourite `gangster` films are The Godfather Parts I & II, Goodfellas, Casino, and Donie Brasco. Of those I`d find it very hard to chose between the Godfathers and Goodfellas, but thanks to the wonders of DVD I don`t have to :)

Slightly of topic but I love the old b&w Cagney/Raft/Bogart fIlms,White Heat is a good film.

Best mob films are Godfarther set, but Goodfellows is up there with them, "do you think I`m funny " brilliant scene....Well I s*** myself.

Well I was expecting a few more detractors, but it`s obvious that with time this film will be no.1. In terms of moviemaking it broke many rules and still came out on top. On the new SE, 10 directors including the Singletons, Jon Favreau, Richard Linklater amongst others - talk about his use of narration in the film and the last day drug sequence - when the film suddenly changes and becomes more agitated and random - they discuss that in most films these strange techniques are often used to fill blank spaces or to attract pop culture - but Goodfellas use them to make the film more personal and insular.

This is a story of one of the footsoldiers, not of the top dogs in the heirarchy. This isn`t the don. This is Joe Shmo - attracted by the style of the mob and being sucked in, `till either death or jail come along. luckily for Henry Hill he managed to be one of the first chosen for the witness relocation programme and escaped to lead a relatively new life as a snook.

Who says Tomato Ketchup on pasta is bad!!!

This film is class - and sits on the top of my pyramid of DVD`s at home.
