ive just wathced meet the parents r1, great film, and noticed that picture wasnt one of the best ive seen. As its my only R1 disc so far i was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is a bad disc, picture wise, or if its standard for R1 discs.

thanks

It seems to be a very well kept secret that all R1 discs are in-fact inferior, in terms of picture quality, to their R2 counterparts. The resolution of NTSC signals (the lines that make up the image) is lower than PAL, about 15 percent less data. This can lead to "dead lines" on some T.V`s which would manifest itself as black dots around fast motion (or an emphasis of edges). make sure you set your DVD to pure NTSC output as quasi-pal modes exagerrate this problem. Some new players (and one or two old ones) have Progressive Scan which fills in the gaps. I can understand why you didn`t know about the differences as everyone seems blissfully ignorant. I myself have learnt to live with it because of release dates being so far apart, but either we have a very keen eye for detail or others are just pretending not to notice.

I did know that there was less lines in the NTSC but people ahve told me that you cannot notice the difference. The picture is fine but its not as good as my R2 discs which are perfect. All i wanted to know was wether anyone has seen a difference between R1 and R2 films fro direct comparison.

I have had no problems with any of my R1 discs, perhaps I have a better quality DVD player??? (only joking!) I have just ordered Meet The Parents so I will let you know what that is like.

yep great film but the picture seemed a bit wishy washy and i noticed some graining in places. My r2 dvds never exhibit this problem, but could it be that my lg3200e doesnt play r1 as well as r2, or could it be that i have it set to auto and not ntsc?
