I dont think you can really do it properly on express, without leaving you pc on and connected to internet whilst you are away which I pursume you wont be doing. Hes probably describing outlook which I know you can because we have it at work, but thats connected to server thats on all the time. I could be wrong.

No it`s definetly Outlook Express he`s talking about because that`s what our company uses.

Is there a OE 7 available?

..........but if your PC isn`t on, how can Outlook Express reply - it won`t even know a mail has arrived. Does your ISP support it as part of the `webmail`?
I`m sure your mate`s company will be using an `Exchange Server` or similar..

Unless your ISP supports it on their webmail, then you`re out of luck.

The function you are talking about it called "Out Of Office Assistant" and you`ll need to be running Outlook proper and have an Exchange Server set up (which you can use to share diaries etc..). Outlook works by receiving/sending emails when you have your PC switched on and collecting them directly from your ISP. With an Exchange server, all your emails go to the server and you synchronise with it when you check your emails. The server can automatically send out replies without you needing your PC switched on.

You can get "business" email through internet providers, which means you use their Exchange server and have all the functions you would if you had you`re own.
