Wharfedale 750 - should I keep it?

David Mc (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 30th December 2000, 16:29

I just got a Wharfedale 750 for X-mas, and have had problems playing Gladiator disc 2 (region 2). Having looked on the net there are various reasons given for this.

Dodgy disc or incompatiblity with this player.

Tesco`s passed me to Wharfedale who state that the problem is with the disc, they advised me to return it to a marketing company (I have the address if anyone needs it).

Im pretty new to DVD so I dont really know much about these imcompatability problems but I am concerned that I now have a DVD player which may not play other film in the future. Should I keep the wharfedale and accept that I will need to upgrade in the future anyway or take it back and get a refund and buy something else? If I do this what should I buy?.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Depends how much You`ve got to spend?

How much was the Wharfdale? They used to make reasonable speakers, but not sure about their visual electronics products.

I`d steer clear of them personally!

Get a Sony,Aiwa, Pioneer you can buy them all region free from most decent shops!

SEND IT BACK PAL, I HAVE HAD TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS AND HAD PROBLEMS WITH BOTH. I GOT A REFUND AND BOUGHT A PIONEER 535 (MULTIREGION) FROM LINKONLINE. IT PLAYS EVERYTHING AND HAS STUNNING SOUND AND PICTURE.

I have a 750S (first gen.) its a great little player. I have had no problems with any of my discs (over 100 R1). The picture quality is great. Can not comment on sound as I do not have a proper set-up.

Michael.

Hi Paul
Picked up a DVD 750S from tesco`s, plugged in the Multi region code, and presto - no issues playing Gladiator R1 (both discs) at all. Having spent 15yrs + in the AV business (design / R*D etc) , and being very aware of value engineering and hype, I would comment that the Wharefedale contains a few neat tricks, and also some average build quality, but @ £179 it`s a steal.

Return it. Get a new one, and start again. Try not to be hounded by the badge snobs who push Sony / Panasonic / Pioneer down your throat - it`s just to impress friends in many cases. (by the way all of the above make good / average. kit too).

I`m sure many thousands of people got the 750s for Xmas, like me. My DVD collection is only 15 or so at present, but so far the Wharfedale has been good. Gladiator region 1 is fine - it`s about 17 quid from www.play247.com including postage.

The only problem to date is Sixth Sense, which on my region 2 copy plays white/green lines in the widescreen part of the picture, whether I`m set to region 2 or region-free. I`ll try a swap-out on that one in case it`s the disc.

As some have said, build quality isn`t great, and the player can be a little noisy once in a while. Otherwise I`m happy.

That 6th Sense thing is a known problem, not your disk.

Once the movie is playing just hit stop then play again, the bars will go away.

Enjoy :)

Hi,

I have a 750S and have problems with region free hack. I carried it out ok, and the "region free" appeared, but when it did appear, the DVD screen turned from blue to green and the dvd`s play with a green tint. I have tried turning the machine off, retrying the hack, opening and closing the tray with different region disks. It came back to blue briefly but went green again when the disk was stopped and restarted.

Any ideas how to overcome this?

Thanks, Tamsin
