pioneer vsx-d510 problem

macdaddy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 11th December 2002, 19:21

My pioneer 510 has a problem when playing certain dvd`s the standard mode is compressed and dull, but switch on the midnight mode and there is more bass the effects are clearerand in all much better. This happen`s in dolby and dts and then some dvd`s sound as they should be when the midnight mode is on.
I can`t understand this as i spoke to pioneer who said it`s another loudness mode, beats me.
Dvds that sound better in midnight mode are lotr in dts ,queen`s dvd-a night at the opera ,rock in rio iron maiden dts ,captain scarlet, any music cd`s,the mummy 1 and 2,etc
If there`s anyone with the same problem please let me know or why this happens.

Isn`t it supposed to do this though? I thought that the midnight mode did this so you could listen at lower volumes without losing sound extremes. IIRC, it compresses the dynamic range of the sound you`re getting out, so in effect you`re getting less variation in sound volume. If you want to hear the standard mode a bit better, turn it up a bit maybe? I have my 510 linked to the low-end packard-bell speakers and sub that PCworld were flogging off cheap earlier in the year, and the sound I get is great at a volume level of 45. Don`t fret - listen to what sounds best for you.

i have my amp up to 45db too . the point is that it sounds better than standard mode .My last amp was a kenwood 5030d and dd was a lot louder than it`s midnight mode, plus the standard mode did`nt sound dull and lifeless with lack of bass even with 10+ and the speakers on small setting on that amp.
What i`m saying is that should it not be the other way round in mode
in that the midnite should compress the level not make louder and more bass .

p.s what set up in on the amp do you have i.e speaker size, crossover etc

many thanks
