Which Player Is The Best? i.e. easy hack, macro etc

FantaC (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 11th February 2001, 10:48

Hi all,

Theres too many to count really, I think that I might go for a Philips 701 as I know that Philips DVD players are very solid machines. My brother has a Philips 710 and it plays all the DVD`s that I own without a problem what-so-ever.

But, I have also noticed a few others: -

JVC XV-522 - £224
LG 3200e - £180
SAMSUNG 511 - £210
HITACHI DV-P305 - £220
PHILIPS 701 - £180

OK, what I want is for people to explain what each player has (Pro`s, Con`s etc) so that I can make my mind up

If you can get to a COSTCO warehouse retailer (there`s one in gateshead)......then i`d recommend the machine I have -

PHILIPS DVD 751.......multi-region with a oneforall remote hack..(which they also have for 19.99 = VAT).....

The player has DTS, Dolby Digital, coaxial out, s-video out, optical out, analogue stereo out, 2 scart inputs/outputs....and its a lovely silver colour........all for 175.00 = VAT

You can get the Samsung 511 for £167 in Asda!!

You can`t remove macrovision though!

Right, that`s it!

I`ve deliberated for too long and have plumped for the Philips 751. An excellent, robust machine with the picture and sound quality to rival any of the more expensive players. I know there is an easy hack for it, so that`s that out of the way.

Unfortunately no Macro hack yet, well not quite...! I have been able to copy some R2 discs but not one R1 disc. I am still trying to figure the hack out and am absolutely sure there is a remote hack. It should work for virtually all Philips players and I`ll keep you all posted on the forthcoming findings!

Now, now! Let`s not start arguing. You obviously think that I haven`t been able to copy some R2 DVD`s. Hmmmm, I wonder why? Maybe because you haven`t been able to yet!

Well, to be honest with you, I`m finding my methods a little strange. I have been able to copy Terminator 2, Snatch, Bugs Life, Fallen and about 15 others from my collection. I can`t seem to copy Austin Powers 1 or 2 and there the ones that I wanted to copy...!

The `so-called` methods have been tested on a 710 and my new 751. I`m still not ready to give information out just yet, I would like my method to be a little more rounded first. Believe me, you will be the first to know my findings.

Well my DVD player is not macro-hacked but the video recorder I tape on is a 1978 Panasonic piano key type and it just ignores Macrovision.

I was reading a article that said there are some modern VHS recorders that will ignore Macrovision, probaly unbranded makes! (it never mentioned any makes or models!)

PS The old type paino key VHS fergusons also ignore Macrovision.

FantaC What make video recorder you useing?

Hi There,

The information you have given is absolutely correct, it doesn`t actually matter that DVD Players send out the Macrovision signal. It is the video players which are the problem to most people. I know for a fact that some modern Sharp video players ignore the DVD macro signal as my parents have one and they can copy any DVD they like...! Typical!

I also think that some of the Daewoo video players ignore the signal as well.

I think that people on this forum should test their DVD players through their video players and give us feedback on the results. That way, we can find out what type of video players ignore the code.

You can e-mail me the results for my upcoming web site: -

Anyway, I have a 3 year old Sony video player.
