Region 4 / Region 2

ultravox (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 25th August 2002, 05:40

Hi there,

I have a Sony DVP-S525D player which is region 4 and want to purchase a disc which is only available in region 2 format and have been told that this region 2 disc will work on my player.

Is this true?

hi,as I understand it if it is a true region 4 machine it will play all regions as Australian law outlaws regional encoding and all machines sold have to be multi region .Beware though a lot of region 4 discs are dual encoded with region 2 as well .One disc that I know is region 2 only is RISK (Metrodome UK label) cat number MT504D

there are a lot of discs that are dual encoded for R2/R4 and some will state it on the back. However, it`s not true that all region 2 discs will play on a region 4 only machine by default. If you know your DVD player can play all regions, then you have nothing to worry about.

If someone tells you that an R2 disc will play back on an R4 machine then hopefully they`ve tried it or will give you a refund if not.

What DVD is it that you want? If I have it, I can set my player to R4 to check...

:-)

Where can I find out about the Australian Law you mention. I purchased the machine about 2 years ago here in Perth, W.A. and paid $1000AU for it. At the time it was one of the first to come out here. I hope what you say is correct and it can play all regions. I`ll try and get a region 2 disk to try it out, but would like to see the law that says this.

Thanks

The R4 reviews at http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/ normally say if a disc is dual region coded or not.
