On the evening of April 10, 1996, 400 lucky people witnessed the public re-emergence of Alice in Chains on the MTV Unplugged stage in New York.
This is the band`s first performance after a three year hiatus from the stage. The band proved again that they are one of the greatest performing bands in music today. The 13 song set highlights material from the band`s albums Dirt and Alice In Chains and the Ep`s SAP and Jar of Flies. The band`s acoustically based Ep`s provide a number of great songs that come to life on this DVD including "Brother" and "Got Me Wrong," "No Excuses" and the plaintive "Nutshell" from Jar of Flies.

This is essentially just the "Unplugged" that was broadcast put straight onto a DVD with no real extras to speak of (there is a text-based discography available however). There are two extra songs added which weren`t in the original broadcast though, and one new track, "The Killer is Me".
Fine music. Fine album. Fine DVD. If you`re an AIC fan, or just a fan of deeply involving rock with soulful lyrics and exquisite guitar work it`s woth getting hold of.
Singer Layne Staley, singer/lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, and drummer Sean Kinney have come together and created an amazing performance. This 1996 MTV show was their first live performance in three years, and best overall performance I have ever seen in my life. Many know alice in chains as a `metal` band or heavy rock or something of that genre. This acoustic set of 13 wonderful tunes tears away all labels and bounds. This is universally good music. Alice in Chains unplugged is the epitome of `easy listening`. Listen to the perfect audio mixing as Layne and Jerry harmonize their vocals--it will at times send chills running through your body. Jerry Cantrell has replaced his blaring rock/blues solos with soft acoustic solos that really go with the songs, and once heard, you will discover what should have been in that empty hole in your music listening life for all those years. Guitar wise--Cantrell is a genious. Friend of the band, Scott Olsen plays rhythm guitar during the show.
Layne Staley hits every note perfectly (with the exception of a few forgotten lyrics which are worked around by Layne well enough that even fans would not pick up with out some intense reviewing). Every word is sung to aural perfection, and like i said, under the right circumstances, I think anyone who listens to his singing will feel chills. Mike Inez is on point with the basslines. This is what a rock bassist SHOULD be-- able to play synced up with the drummer`s kick. Not only does he do this, he perfects it. The mellow basslines throughout the show are very noticable and very moving, and are a crucial part of the songs...And last but not least--my main man Sean Kinney on drums....This dude is the s***. And an extremely funny man (you dont get to see him talk on the dvd). He and Mike Inez play together like birds of a feather. Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley hit note for note chillingly together. Pair the pairs and what do you have? In my opinion the best rock and roll band ever. Sadly Layne Staley was killed by an accidental cocaine/heroine overdose....LAYNE: THANK YOU FOR YOUR MUSIC, YOUR INSPIRATION AND YOUR SACRIFICE....THE ONLY TRUE DEAD ARE THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN---YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN...RIP
