    Synopsis:
Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar) loves life and sports and lives with his sister Ratna. Their uncle, Dr. Kedar, is a close friend of the family and has always made sure that the two are well looked after since their parents died. Dr. Kedar sets Ram up for a job interview with the company Urmila Trading Corporation.

The owner of the company, Bhawani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), is a close friend of Dr. Kedar. Dr. Kedar informs Ram about the kind of person Bhawani is, which will help Ram get the job. Bhawani is a man with some eccentric values, believing that men with a moustache have a cleaner heart then those without. He also believes that the youth should concentrate on studies and work instead of dances and sport.

Ram dots oil in his hair and wears a short kurta and goes for the job interview. Ram gets the job and Bhawani is please that someone like Ram is working for him. Eventually Ram begins to fit in the job well, which results in him getting a raise on his already high paid salary, even if it means him looking like a `dud`.

A hockey match is to be played between India and Pakistan, and Ram desperately wants to view this game of the year but this would mean bunking off work as the match is to be played during office hours. He gets one of his mates to phone his boss stating that his mother is ill and that she urgently wishes to see him. The boss then gives Ram the rest of the day off, who with his mates, makes off to watch the hockey match. Bhawani makes his way to the stadium for business purposes and sees Ram there. This shocks him and when he sees Ram the next day at work he demands an explanation.

Ram, on the spot makes up a story, that Bhawani saw was his unemployed and clean shaven twin brother, Laxman Prasad, known as Lucky for short. After much convincing, Bhawani believes him and as a sign of forgiveness asks Ram to call in Laxman so that he can offer a job to him. Stuck with this story and Bhawani`s persistence Ram shaves his moustache and becomes Lucky, teaching Bhawani`s daughter Urmila (Bindiya Goswami) music during the evenings, while doting a false moustache during the day in the office. Both Urmila and Lucky begin to fall in love with each other, which will further complicate Ram`s predicament with his boss...
