    Review of Broken Arrow

    9 / 10

    Introduction

Opinion seems to be divided on this particular film. John Travolta went for it purely on the recommendation of Quentin Tarantino who is a big John Woo fan. But it appears that hardcore Woo fans don`t like it, citing lack of action, and a poor plot. Personally, I like this film a lot. It may not be a Woo classic, but it shouldn`t be judged by the same criteria.

I won`t get into the plot too much, admittedly there isn`t a great deal in it. This is a big Hollywood action film with plenty of action, fight scenes, guns, planes, helicopters, nuclear weapons, and amusing one-liners from good and bad guys. This basically amounts to plenty to keep you entertained.

    Video

I`ve now seen this film on screens ranging from large (at the cinema) to very small (a 4 inch screen hovering above a hospital bed), and it`s a visual treat on DVD. An anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer that really is the business.

The visuals are good, and you can feel the heat of the sun beating down on the desert sands. Colours are good, as are blacks in the night scenes.

As you`d expect from a big action film, there are a fair number of special effects and these too look good on the DVD.

    Audio

Sound is also good, plenty of explosions both small and large (and one very large indeed) to shake your room. A reasonable amount for the rears to do in places too. A good 5.1 mix.

One thing that stands out for me is the simple melody (Duane Eddy on baritone guitar) which repeats during the film. It`s only a few notes, but the music seems to fit so well. It must be played loud to be appreciated.

    Features

Extras are very poor, with just a trailer, but the film itself is good enough in my book to overlook this. Yes, there should have been more, but we have to make do!

    Conclusion

Broken Arrow - point yourself at the DVD shop and get it. A must see for action fans, and a good couple of hours of Hollywood action blockbuster for your money. Woo fans may feel a bit let down, but this is still a good action film in its own right.
