Review for WWE Summerslam 2015

7 / 10

Summerslam is the second biggest event in the WWE calender and I have to admit that the build to the event was fantastic. The execution could have been better, but could have been a lot worse.

The intro with comedian Jon Stewart and Hall of Famer Mick Foley did make me smile, though much like many of the 'Host' PPV ideas I never actually understand what it is supposed to achieve.

Sheamus against Randy Orton, again? Didn't I just watch this match? They work good with each other, but I found myself being totally uninterested in the match. The match didn't achieve anything and though I enjoyed the ending, it isn't a match I would watch again.

The Fatal Four-way WWE Tag Championship between New Day, Lucha Dragons, Los Matadores and Prime Time Players was a pretty good match. I do wish that this had been an elimination style for it to make more sense. However, there are some fantastic moments throughout from all four teams.

Dolph Ziggler against Rusev was an interesting match simply for the storyline that went along with it. Both worked well with each other and both Lana and Summer Rae look amazing in their new attire. Rusev almost gets back the aura he had before his loss to Cena at Wrestlemania. Not a bad match, but I certainly wouldn't say it is perfect and the result was slightly pointless.

Stephen Amell and Neville against Stardust and King Barrett was a bizarre match featuring Amell star of the show Arrow. The opening cartoon promo was pretty cool, but I had flashbacks to Jay Leno and David Arquette in WCW while watching this match. That is not to say that it was that bad. It's certainly not. Amell is certainly not a great wrestler, but he is not awful and though you can tell that Stardust and Barrett are taking it easy on him, the match itself is not unwatchable. It is helped by the amazing performance by Neville.

Intercontinental Championship between Ryback, The Miz and Big Show could have been good, but unfortunately just wasn't given enough time to mean anything. This could also be said for the Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns match against The Wyatts. I watched this match and felt like I had gone back in time nearly two years. This match wasn't bad, it just didn't feel like it meant anything.

Seth Rollins against John Cena to unify the World and US belts was a pretty good match. I understand why they did what they did with the ending and I think it did work. The match itself was worthy of being the main event, but obviously with the hype behind Lesnar/Taker this wasn't going to happen. I did enjoy this match and think this was a great way to show why WWE have put so much faith behind Seth Rollins.

The Three-Way Divas Elimination match between Teams PCB, Bella and BAD was the first real showing of the 'Divas Revolution' and I'm not sure at the moment. PCB consists of Paige and NXT newcomers Charlotte (Ric Flair's daughter) and Becky Lynch, Bella consisting of The Bella Twins and Alicia Fox and BAD Tomina, Sasha Banks and Naomi. All three teams have a good dynamic and I can't deny they all look amazing and though this is one of the better Divas matches I have seen in a long while, it is still not perfect. But it is a good start to the revolution.

Kevin Owens against Cesaro felt more like filler. I'm not really sure why it was on here. The surprising thing is simply the fact that it went on for nearly fifteen minutes and almost as long as the World Title and Main Event. Granted, the fact I am saying that the main event of this event was less than twenty minutes long, probably says more about the booking of that match. Both of these guys work well together, but again it just didn't make any sense and maybe if this had been Owens against the NXT Champion it would have been better.

Brock Lesnar against The Undertaker was such a disappointment that I'm not even sure what I am meant to think about it. I feel it was just all hype and not payoff. The match itself felt like every other rematch after Wrestlemania with Taker and anything less than a win for Taker would have been utterly pointless. That being said, the ending to this match made no sense. I didn't want to see the match end that way. We all know how a Lesnar/Taker match should end and this is not it. Maybe after the loss of the streak, I wasn't going to satisfied no matter the ending, it just wasn't as satisfying as it should have been.

Summerslam felt a little odd to me this year. Nothing is unwatchable, but nothing is really that memorable either. The Divas match was good, as was the Cena/Rollins match and even the Taker/Lesnar match was pretty good, but none of them had a big match feel. If you had slotted any of these matches on Raw or Smackdown, they would not look out of place. As a whole event, especially with it being four hours long, I felt that much of it dragged and sadly if they had just given the time to some of the matches instead of having far too many short matches it would have worked better. I enjoyed the event, I just don't know whether it will be enough for me to watch again.
