Review for WWE Summerslam 2011

8 / 10

Money in the Bank was possibly the best PPV I have seen in years. YEARS!!! The emotional rollercoaster was so intense how could it not be? My opinion? Bringing CM Punk back was a two edged sword. On the one hand it's great to see him as always... On the other? WWE should have been smarter to have held off on this for a while longer at least until Survivor Series or even until Wrestlemania.

Summerslam was a good PPV too. If a little bit of a mixbag and the lack of a proper tag match is disappointing. The inclusion of Cee Lo Green? Why? And did WWE loan him an old Viscera costume? Even the appearance just wasn't enough to keep me interested. Reminded me of when WCW would put Kiss concerts on Nitro that would bomb in the ratings. This just felt a little dull. Anyway, on with the show...

Rey Mysterio, John Morrison and Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz, R-Truth and Alberto Del Rio

A great match and certainly one of the best tag matches I have seen for a while. However, it just felt like a nothing match, a match that had no real impact on the world. Technically it is wonderfully, emotionally it is a little bland.

Mark Henry vs. Sheamus

An Ok match, but nothing special. I'm not a fan of either and so did not care about this match at all. Felt a lot like the old WWE of huge bulls (thinking Don Muraco and Dino Bravo) just hauling each other all over the ring.

WWE Divas ChampionshipKelly Kelly

I get to see Kelly and Eve and even Natalya and Beth look great. Shame they had to wrestle though. I mean it wasn't terrible... it just wasn't great either.

Wade Barrett vs. Daniel Bryan

One of the best matches of the night. A real marks dream. Both show that if WWE put some faith behind them they can carry a match and given more time will make it even better. Great match.

World Heavyweight Championship
No Holds Barred
Christian vs. Randy Orton

I can't decide whether this was a good match or not. It felt very generic and not the brutal matches No Holds Barred usually signified. However, there were some great moments and the ending was pretty cool, though I think I've seen that done a few too many times now.

Undisputed WWE Championship
CM Punk vs. John Cena
After last months Five Star Match this was bound to be a little disappointing and it is. I really thought they would have held off on this for a few months. Let the feud brew for a while as for me this is far too soon to be doing this. The match is actually not that bad. It doesn't have the same intensity of the last one, but still proves that Cena and Punk work together well in the ring and Punk will continue to be one of the few reasons why I continue to watch wrestling. The ending? I'm not even going to comment. I would just recommend all fans of CM Punk to switch this DVD off at 2hours 44 and pretend the rest didn't happen.

As for the PPV as a whole? It was fine. I found it a bit of a mixbag with the Divas match just an excuse to look at Kelly and Eve, Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett and the Six Man Tag match great, the two Championship matches were good and the Mark Henry/Sheamus match was ok. Summerslam 2011 was not going to be a PPV you will watch and rewatch, but it's worth a second look.
