Review for Two and a Half Men Season Seven

Two and a Half Men is what I would call 'popcorn television'. Its not the type of program that I will learn anything from or indeed I will recall once it has finished, but for a half hour it is just a program that can be watched for the entertainment value alone.

This show in its Seventh Season follows Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen) a jingle musician who has as much respect for women as he has for…well… he just doesn't. Watching him over the past sev seasons and you wonder just how many women he has actually slept with and also whether you should be impressed at this achievement or saddened by his lack of commitment to a person. He is joined by his brother Alan (Jon Cryer), a neurotic divorcee who is living with his brother after his wife kicked him out in the first season. Alan also seems unable to keep a woman, but that is more down to his complete inability to stop himself acting like a fool. The 'Half Man' of the title is taken by Alan's son Jake (Angus T. Jones), who now fifteen is starting to date leading to him taking the advice of his uncle and father… neither being the best people to listen to.

Season Seven's main focus is Charlie's imminent wedding to Chelsea, a woman who he deeply loves and it seems may actually be able to commit to. Watching the show, you do wonder what they have in common besides an enjoyment of sex and this is never really explored and so you can only conclude that this is all they have. Alan and Jake don't really have any standout episodes in this Season (Despite Cryer finally winning the Emmy for it), though their performances are still great and bring a lot of humour to the shows. The only real standout show was Charlie getting stoned and being visited by a variety of women from his past who all question his ability to commit and treat women badly. Though good, I half expected this to be a season finale pastiche of A Christmas Carol, but that was not to be. The DVD includes a short featurette on this episode which is a little redundant and also bloopers which are pretty funny.

Two and a Half Men is not a show that you take too seriously. In fact, if you do you may as well not watch it as it is obviously sexist and utterly juvenile. If you are after intelligent humour try 30 Rock or reruns of Frasier, but if you just want to switch off your brain and go with the flow, this is a great show to watch.
