Mr Bates vs The Post Office

Only two episodes in but going through every emotion under the sun, primarily f***in' anger.
Anyone else watching/watched?
Amazing performances and script telling a truly heartbreaking true story in yet another great miscarriage of justice of our time.

thought it wa astounding, if I didn't know it was real I would have been, really good but a bit far fetched, no one ever brought to book is the staggering thing!!

It was the misguided and unerring faith in the non-human element that annoyed me the most. To take it on numbers alone, in such vast and unrealistic numbers, displays a level of gullibility that borders on the insane.

I think I nicked this from Wild Things, but there's a term I like to use in situations like these - Once is accidental, twice is coincidental, three times is enemy action. It should have been obvious, very quickly, to anyone who wasn't a shareholder in Fujitsu, that something was very wrong with the system rather than the postmasters.

I love computers, and get on very well with proprietary systems (I use 3 concurrently at work on a daily basis), but even a company as big as the one where I work is smart enough to spot when something is up (even if it's me that has to tell the IT department, which has happened more than once).

This is also why I don't trust AI and will never use a self-driving car.

I'm not sure there's much of a non-human element here to be honest.
It's not AI.
The application was coded by humans. Humans knew there were big issues with it. Humans told other humans they were the only ones with the problem. Humans covered more and more up while other humans were literally killing themselves. I'm really not sure there was too much 'unnerring faith' in the system, they knew damn well there were problems and covered it up.

Sunak announces law to overturn convictions in Post Office scandal

After 25 years, it takes a TV drama!

Could ITV commission a TV drama about Grenfell, about the govt giving billions to their best friends for worthless PPE, about the Rwanda scheme?

Hi guys, I'm new and just had to respond to this thread, as many of us in UK were very angry at the plight of these Postmasters and the drama brought our attention to it. What angered me not only of the injustice of it all and the fact so many honest people were hounded even to death, yet the faulty Horizon system was covered up over the years.

Another annoying aspect which showed up in the drama was the cost of having justice in the British court system, where to prove your innocence you need loads of wonga to participate. In fact a payout of roughly 50M was given to the first 555 victims, yet they only got 15M, which is £20,000 each, so the risk capitalists that put out the money in got the lions share. I suppose you could argue the case that the risk taker risked all, but there is a lot of greed in the system, where victims went uncompensated to a decent value.

Following along with the live updates from the hearing today. Stephen Bradshaw, a post office investigator who was involved with criminal proceedings against nine sub-postmasters, is giving evidence, and he really isn't looking good. Post of the statements he signed off on, which eventually led to prosecutions & prison sentences, were written up by Lawyers & the Post Office PR department, which he just blindly put his name to. And despite not being 'technically minded' (his words), he still continued to claim the Horizon system was working perfectly.

In fact, when obvious bugs were highlighted, the person who bought them to the Post Office's attention, was ignored, sacked & discredited.

In parliament the other day they were baying for blood with regard to those responsible for the scandal, one back bench MP even called for life sentences for high level corporation employees who knowingly allowed this scandal to continue for years and persecuted these postmasters.

Whether its MP's responsible at the time and post office/fujitsu corporation employees, they should be all held accountable. Lets see the weight of the law acted upon them, this time. Trouble is highfaluting characters have a way of brushing guilt off or passing the buck.

This one is currently in production by the BBC, although the survivors are petitioning against it:

Not doing himself any good at all although trying to wriggle out of everything.
Purely subjective opinion but I can imagine him being a nasty piece of work outside a court room.

Whatever else happens as a result of all this the Post Office being allowed to be Judge, Jury and executioner should come to a halt today. Any cases they're currently pursuing should be passed over to normal channels ie: police, CPS etc.
