The Last Ever Neighbours

(until the inevitable revival)

is on tonight on Channel 5 at 9pm (Friday 29th August 2022)

A mainstay of my adolescence, my friend had a Casio handheld TV, and we used to secretly watch it in the back of my history class; not so secretly after our teacher (an Aussie expat) found out and joined in. I loved those early episodes, the Ramseys and the Robinsons, Des and Daphne, Mrs Mangel, Bouncer...

I tuned out in the early nineties and haven't watched it since.

But Scott and Charlene are back for the final episode, so I might just have to tune in...

When I completed basic training in 1986 and was in a holding troop until posted to trade training school, we all used to congregate in the common room after a spot of lunch to catch up with Neighbours...

I used to watch it "ironically" in the 80s / 90s and as a student, etc. (yeah, that's right, watching a programme religiously for years that I "didn't enjoy") probably up to the point where some of the older alumni were in it - Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Pearce, possibly Russell Crowe. There was some surfer dude character who kept on having 'smoothies', and that's when I first learned what a smoothie was...

I'll probably watch it on catch-up at some point (ironically of course).

Caught the last 20 minutes... suitably nostalgic, and a whole lot of cameos from the past. But I wasn't expecting Guy Pearce to give it his all for a Mike x Jane storyline.

4 months!

4 Months for inevitability to take root.

Amazon reviving Neighbours and it will be (ad-supported) free to stream

Kind of makes the whole end of an era thing feel emotionally manipulative, in the light, summery, 'want some quiche?' emotions that Neighbours engendered.
