Page 1 of [VIDEO] The Knick
Television Forum
New show from Cinemax (owned by HBO). All 10 episodes are directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Clive Owen and a few other potentially familiar faces (Cara Seymour is great as a nun with razor sharp wit).
Quote:
In New York City in 1900, the Knickerbocker Hospital operates with innovative surgeons, nurses and staff who have to overcome medicinal limitations to prevent staggeringly high mortality rates. Dr. John Thackery, the newly appointed leader of the surgery staff, battles his cocaine and opium addictions with his ambition for medical discovery and reputation among his peers. Harvard graduate Dr. Algernon Edwards must fight for respect within the all-white-populated hospital, as well as the racially charged city. While literally struggling to keep the lights on, the hospital attempts to attract a wealthy clientele, without sacrificing quality care.
Sounds kinda dry on paper but the first episode is great! The show was renewed for a second season before the pilot even aired.

We've just finished the pilot and it is brilliant. The tone brought a few other great shows to mind like Boardwalk Empire and Young Doctors Notebook and Cliff Martinez score is superb.
Starts on Sky Atlantic next Thursday October 16th @ 9pm.
Watch it! (unless you have a weak stomach, in which case maybe give it a pass :D )
The second season begins on Sky Atlantic tomorrow night (Jan 12th) at 9pm.
Truly exceptional television! You owe it to yourself to watch it.
I was hoping it would be renewed for a third season, but... (vague ending spoilers)
SPOILER:
the last episode is so deliciously bleak that I almost don't want it to come back.
Just finished series 1, really enjoyed it, so thanks for the recommendation. I do like a gritty period drama, and this is definitely that.
Surprisingly not-gory considering the subject matter.
SPOILER:
Lol at the heroin bottle, predictable but still funny.
