Further proof Wenger was right??

Fowler9 (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 8th April 2008, 08:46

Obviously there was some debate when Wenger sold Henry as to whether it was a good move by Wenger or whether he`d sold him cheaply etc etc

According to stories today Henry is to be put up for sale by Barca in the summer - after just 1 season with them.

Numerous premiership clubs are reportedly interested in him

Given the performance of the Arsenal team without him and (assuming the story is true) Barca`s desire to offload so soon does it make Wenger`s decision even more of the right one?

Wenger?
Right?
HA!
He`s off his head.
Only days after a 5-1 cuffing from Spurs, a defeat to Chelsea and a heap of draws he was spouting crap about Arsenal being `the best in the world`.
Then he states that Diaby`s horrendous tackle at Bolton was "different" from Martin Taylor`s tackle because it was a "defensive tackle".
Whatever the f*** that means.
The man`s a prick.

Returning to the point... ;)
No, I don`t think he was right to get rid of Henry.
From what I`ve seen of his performances of late, he`s being played in a wide position, which just doesn`t suit him.
I seem to remember hearing/reading about him being unhappy about it.
I still think he`s good enough, through the middle, easy.

not questioning that, but the team seem to perform better without Henry in it.
Barca obviously dont see him as "top drawer" otherwise they`d make sure he plays down the middle - at the moment I believe they have a 17 yr old (maybe 19yr old) playing the central striker (Bojan?) which I think says a lot

At the time I thought £16mill for a 30 yr old was good business (given the trf market at the time also) and having seen how the Arsenal team have performed without him - ie IMO better as a team unit - I still think he timed the sale well

I think Barca are in danger of knee-jerk over-reaction to their ageing squad.
Henry getting the dunt, Ronaldino to f***ing Man City!
Steady on... :/

wenger wasn`t right. barring injuries, he was a guarantee of nearly 30 league goals a season. adebayor hasn`t scored in the league for ages, personally, i think there is a lot less fear in playing arsenal now - no need to worry for 90 minutes about henry running through 5 players and scoring a wonder goal.

it also seems that team spirit isn`t that much better without him: gallas, bednter etc

i don`t think that`s the right way of looking at it. rijkaard has been pretty stupid with tactics and such over the last couple of seasons. eto`o plays on the right for some reason. barca have thrown away countless opportunities to cut real madrid`s lead over the last few weeks.

Bojan`s not long turned 17.

He`s suprised them as he`s been more impressive than Giovannia Dos Santos who was supposed to be the new "Messi" :o (it`s about time they got a new one, he`s on his last legs now ;) )

He was definitely right, just as he was when he sold Viera a few years earlier. Let`s not forget how everyone said he was mad then too. Anyone that thinks Henry wasn`t passed his best, probably didn`t watch him much during his last season at Arsenal.

Sure he had injury problems, and was tired after the World Cup, but how anyone could say he was at his best beats the heck out of me. Everyone feared him because of his reputation, and whilst yes he was still dangerous, he was much less so than the season before.

You can slag off Wenger all you like for all number of things, but if you think he isn`t the most shrewd manager when it comes to young talent, and when to put mature talent out to graze, I suspect your bitter bias is seriously clouding your judgement.

I`ll add that this hits the nail on the head

Diaby`s was probably a worse challenge.

Re: Barca and Henry.

Basically they`ve fallen for the exact same trappings as Real Madrid did and fallen for the "Galatico" signings that are needed so that the president of the club can justify himself getting voted in for another term.

The only reason Bojan plays down the middle is Henry has never been one to play down the middle himself and has always drifted into positions about wide, which mean in the formation that Barca play he is probably best suited to the wide position in that formation.

Just because he had performed so highly does not mean it will continue, you also have to consider the timing with regards to getting the best price for him. Another "bad" year would see the price drop even further

For the record Henry scoring looks thus :

06/07 - Total goals : 12 League goals : 10
05/06 - Total goals : 33 League goals : 27
04/05 - Total goals : 30 League goals : 25
03/04 - Total goals : 39 League goals : 30
02/03 - Total goals : 32 League goals : 24
01/02 - Total goals : 32 League goals : 24
00/01 - Total goals : 22 League goals : 17
99/00 - Total goals : 26 League goals : 17

Adebayor

07/08 - Total goals : 24 League goals : 19
06/07 - Total goals : 12 League goals : 8
05/06 - Total goals : 4 League goals : 4

Apart from the fact that their team play has been better with more of the lads showing their head above the parapet? so instead of worrying just about Henry opposition now have to worry about Fabregas, Adebayor, Hleb, Van Persie, Rosicky, Flamini etc ?

I;d rather have to worry about one person than a whole team

Personally I think this is the best they`ve been for 2 - 3 years now

Whilst I agree with you I think you miss my point. If Henry is still soooo good and near/at his peak then surely he;d automatically become the focal point of the strikers under any manager with the likes of Eto`o fitting around him

The fact that Eto`o and Henry are being made to fit around the likes of Messi and Bojan would suggest (and i say suggest not means) that now that they;ve got him he isnt thought to be quite what he was.
As I say a mere observation, or theory if you will, rather than fact!!!

very possibly. Although isnt Ronaldinho;s likely departure more a case of him falling off the rails a touch and Barca not wanting to deal with it rather than his age (of what 28 or 29)?

Agreed. It doesnt matter that you already struggle to fit the 5 or 6 quality strikers in your team just add another one to the mix and see how much more difficult it becomes to get people happy and playing well LOL

IMO, they`re as much of a `one man team` with Adebayor as they were with Henry.
If you can cut out crosses and set pieces, you can contain Adebayor.
It was a lot more difficult to contain Henry.
They certainly don`t fear me as much as they used to under Henry.
That`s not to say Henry would still be as scary if he were still there!
Who knows.
I certainly don`t agree they`re a better side now, not at all.
