Play and Customs

elmore (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 23rd October 2002, 13:37

I know this is an old chestnut, but I`ve had a look around the old threads and can`t the answer I`m looking for.

If I buy LOTR R2 from play at £22.49:

a) How likely is it that I`ll have to pay the postman VAT/customs/PO handling charge?

and

b) How much is it likely to be?

cheers

0% chance

Play is a British site; okay they are based in Jersey but so what? Would you get charged to receive something from the Isle of Wight? Course, not what`s the difference?

thanks,

so why did splash call themselves under 18 before?

I was assuming the "under18" bit was relevant

Jersey is NOT part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It has its own parliament and does not follow UK tax laws hence no VAT. It is outside the EU so the tax de minimus limits for importation are £18 commercial and £36 gift.

There are quite a few threads on this board about play and VAT but if UK Customs intercept the parcel and charge you there`s nowt you can do about it.

Quite right `under 18` was a very relevant title !

Hope this helps,

Pete

Yeah, I wasn`t sure anyway, that`s why they can charge cheaper prices then.
I got 4 arrive in one day banded together, but didn`t get charged, price was probably less than £32 though, but more than £18. As they are crossed as merchandise looks like I could have got charged.

I`ve never paid a penny of vat when ordering from play, on the packaging it does have a tick box for gift though, why can`t you request that to be ticked for you?!
