Windows 10 upgrade system tray icon

RJS (undefined) posted this on Monday, 1st June 2015, 15:06

Suddenly appeared for me on my Windows 7 PC which I have no intention of moving to Windows 10 just yet. I'll move to it on my laptop first and see if I prefer it to W7 (highly unlikely though).

To get rid of it, open Programs and Features control panel, click View installed updates on the left panel, and then uninstall Windows Update KB3035583 under the Microsoft Windows section.

Requires a reboot, typical Microsoft. :(

I haven't trusted windows to automatically update my PC since the great BSOD debacle from a few years ago. Bit the bullet a few weeks ago and manually installed about 84 updates. Took a fair while and the restart took about 15 minutes afterwards.

Not good practice that.  By all means switch off the automatic updates if you want but make sure you check much more regularly than you have been.
Personally, I let W7 install all critical updates by itself.

By the way, has it been proven stable yet?

I got it this evening when I switched on. Had a momentary panic when my firewall blocked the outbound connection attempt, but a quick process search revealed what it was.

Now I have the new PC I might put it on the old one just to see what it's like. There's almost nothing installed on that one bar LibreOffice and a couple of browsers, so it's unlikely to cause compatibility issues.

Uninstalled the thingy, but not before having a quick consult. Apparently the thing i mentioned earlier, about not trusting updates and not allowing them to install without your knowledge, will be impossible in the sub-professional versions of 10. All updates will install automatically with no option at all to turn that function off, meaning if there's a rotten apple in the barrel, there's a very good chance that EVERY SINGLE PC with 10 could be instantaneously bricked because someone didn't put a decimal point in the right place.

Speaking from experience, about 75% of PC users I've come across have no idea of what does on inside their PC, and couldn't tell a graphics card from a hard drive. To have this crap happen to them (which it will) would do nothing except massively inflate the bank balances of hack shops like PC world.

win 10 has been more or less fine here so far (the only issues I have had have been using VMs), I've got it set to download updates, but only install them when I let it, much liek I have with previous versions of Windows.

Popped on the Windows 10 facebook page to enquire about the whole 'forced updates' thing. It's odd, but whenever someone posts something glowing with admiration for everything M$ does, they respond straight away. For some reason they haven't got back to me yet

The irritating thing for me is how they've hidden it inside a KB update which doesn't describe what it is at all. Is it that hard to make it transparent and easy to disable?

looking at the info you get from the tray icon, the program quietly downloads files in the background in preparation for the actual update. This is 'to save time on the day'.  So not only are they forcing this on unwary users,  but those on less than magnificent connection (8mb here, yay villages) will find their connections strangely slow from now until release date.

This whole thing absolutely stinks
