Viewing on a non widescreen TV with a Dansai 852

michrich (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 13th February 2002, 14:44

I have just bought my first DVD player, a Dansai 852. I also have a non widescreen TV that has Scart sockets.
My question is how to view DVD`s without tramlines on 4:3. I bought 2 DVD`s to get started each are Widescreen. I followed the instruction manual in the Player to select non widescreen but it doesn`t help. The only way around is to Zoom the picture to X2.
What should I look for on a DVD bearing in mind that one day I may upgrade my TV.
Thanks

Why would you want to see films in pan and scan, they look terrible?
With widescreen (even on a 4:3 set) you see the film the way the director intended, other wise the sides are chopped off!!!

This is because when watching widescreen you loose over 1/3 of the screen.

I have the same problem when watching some rented films.
I try to avoid widescreen films but this isn`t always possible.

I`ve found that changing the mode to Wide does help a bit. As you say there is still a loss of about 1/3 of the picture. My other trick is to then zoom to 1.5x which works well but gives a very pixalated picture.

I just can`t get used to widescreen and therefore will never buy a telly in that format.

4:3 rules!

Isn`t it nice to see people who haven`t moved out of the 1950`s....
What happens when you watch terrestrial programs shot in widescreen such as ER, Buffy, Angel, hell even Eastenders, Neighbours and Home and Away are shot in widescreen?
With widescreen becoming the norm (and virtually every program being shot in at least 14:9 - which personally i see as a cop out from full 16:9) are you going to stop watching your TV because it doesn`t use all of the screen any more?
Get with the program, widescreen is the future... or have you only just traded up from black and white within the last few years?
