Page 1 of How to build a website?
General Forum
Hello, can anyone give me some advise on how to build my own website...eg the tools i would need and how i would start off.
I think i am quite clued up on the workings of PCs but have never tried building my own website.
I would appreciate it if someone could point me to any tutorials on this subject.
CHEERS!
I would suggest a WYSWYG (What You See is What You Get) HTML editor. There you see and edit what should (hopefully) appear on screen in the web browser.
Dreamweaver and Frontpage are good editors. Frontpage is probably easier for beginners. Dreamweaver is also available as a free 30 day trial. It is a hefty download for 56k users, although many computer mags offer the trial on their cover discs.
I reccomend using the same layout for each page on your site, like DVD Reviewer has done and/or "branch" all other pages from the main page like on my site http://www.seanuk.net.
Don`t embed sounds as they take a while to load and just sound cheesey. Keep images embedded small and don`t go overboard.
Do a page that you think people will care about. Not about "My pet dog" - who cares?? (apologies to anyone here who may have aite about their pet).
hmmm... "Do a page that you think people will care about. Not about "My pet dog" - who cares?? (apologies to anyone here who may have aite about their pet)." That would our very own RJS mate! ;-)
Anyway, skirpydoink,
This site is VERY good once you get started on your site and need some help:
http://www.htmlhelpcentral.com
these are good for when you start to get a bit more technical, javascripts:
http://javascript.internet.com/

Like sparkster says, to begin with something like Frontpage would be best until you learn a bit of html.
No offence intended RJS, I`m sure your site is very good and your dog great. Up there with Lassie, K9 and Yeller and all the other famnous dogs.
