Quote:
A 39-year-old UK man has been convicted of possessing illegal cartoon drawings of young girls exposing themselves in school uniforms and engaging in sex acts. The case is believed to be the UK's first prosecution of illegal manga and anime images.

Local media said that Robul Hoque was sentenced last week to nine months' imprisonment, though the sentence is suspended so long as the defendant does not break the law again.

Having no idea of what the content of these images is like, nor particularly wanting to find out, I'm sure when a lot of us think of anime and manga, schoolgirls in very short skirts showing their knickers is far from unusual.

wasn't a similar concern raised about S&M in porn and certain fetish material? Even if it was made with consenting adults, the similarity to illegal material makes for a grey area.

some might argue, that it's "better" some-one looks at manga images than the real thing, but I guess others might say it may start on manga before moving on to harder stuff :(

I'm guessing this was more of the "lolicon" variety than traditional manga/anime etc.

It does seem like an overly harsh punishment, though.

Pretty much. It's drawn Child Pornography, which while pretty sick, has no victim, unlike the real thing. This kind of thing is perfectly OK in japan, where it's openly sold in shops and on the street, as they know the obvious difference between fantasy and reality.

Naturally, connections will be made between virtual and real, citing that if this man collected images of imaginary characters indulging in sexual activities, he'd naturally be tempted to grab your child off the street. Sorry, that's the Daily mail talking

I'm not defending the guy, as I find the stuff pretty pathetic, actually, but there is a very clear distinction between a cartoon and a photograph. If the drawn image of a naked underage girl is the same as reality, then anyone who owns The Little Mermaid or the Rescuers could be brought to task as well.

Thought I'd better pipe up, lest someone starts scouring the tabloids for my name!

I doubt very much that it's the sort of borderline matter of a few upskirt images. The police would act on a whole lot more evidence, and I bet that there's a whole side of the story left out of the news reports, as they like to harp on the foreign muck angle.

If you're buying in the UK, then you're safe, as it will all have been passed by the BBFC in the case of anime, and obscene publications in the case of manga. Your Elfen Lied and Dance in the Vampire Bund are safe. Importing might get you into trouble, but given the similar court cases in the US and Canada, it's fair to say that anything you import from the Region 1 is safe as well.

And contrary to popular belief, Japan's trying to crack down on this stuff as well. There have been more than a few laws passed, and the official publications, and anime have to conform to broadcast and print standards. It's the fan originated stuff, the manga fan fic called doujins that will probably cross the line. If you're importing that stuff, then you are setting yourself up for a fall, and have more money than sense.

...or downloading it in bulk from links posted on 4chan, who apparently have no problem with threads full of the stuff, no matter how many times I hit the report button
