Considering the rip off prices in the UK for DVDs and CD`s, I am amazed the figure is not higher.

Take for instance the `Woman in Black` DVD. When it came out they wanted up to £14 for it in some shops. Now that is just nonsense considering the recession that we are in, its a case of the halves and the halve nots. So its a great temptation for some with limited cash to go down the dodgy pirated route.

I have said this in other similar threads before, that if new DVDs in the shops were around a cheaper price initially, then more would buy it legally as it would be more affordable.

What I do now myself, and in the specific above case of the `Woman in black`, I just waited till it fell in price in the shops, over the months till it reached a fiver,

To me it is the principle of the thing, as I would not pay an excessive price for a DVD and just wait till it becomes what it should really be.

The home entertainment model has always been to sell high at release and then taper off (with some exceptions). Early adopters always pay more. While I don`t think the price they charge for some stuff is justifiable it`s not like there isn`t a precedent for this sort of thing.

Anyway, yes, downloading... Also surprised it`s not higher. Actually, it probably is. How many people answered that survey truthfully?

that`s most probably part of it, and there`s ppl that won`t download illegal content for various reasons.

Another other part of it, is that sometimes us tech savvy ppl forget there`s a lot of naive/less techy ppl on the  internet who don`t know how or aren`t interested in downloading illegal stuff themselves. For example my other half, and sister in law don`t/wouldn`t know how to do, but then they don`t need to as they probably know ppl who do ;)

Or an the office I used to work, there was a lot of ppl of various ages, various backgrounds, some of which only used computers at work `cos they had to do their job, but they could use Amazon, lastminute.com etc at lunch time with no problem, but wouldn`t touch a computer out of work, so they`d class as internet users, but no illegal activity.

One thing that has cut piracy down a lot is getting the film from cinema into the shops as a DVD, ASAP.

I remember way back when the first `Lord of the rings` film came out, it took nearly a year for it to end up in the shops. I just could not wait to own it.

Now, they are a lot quicker with films getting to the shops.

What about instances where you can get the film before it`s released in this country

End of Watch being a recent example

I found a pirate video cd of LOTR the other day and put it on to see what it was like....I really could lend it to whoever makes those anti-piracy clips as it is dreadful!

I just wait until stuff gets to a reasonable price these days, really wanted the Senna movie for instance when it came out. I picked up a 2 disc version for a £1 at a car boot the other day. My days of spending £40 on Alien Legacy box sets and Star Wars Trilogy video box sets are well and truly over!
