Broken leg recovery time?

JohnnyTV (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 18th May 2005, 09:30

Hi everyone, about 3 and a half weeks ago I broke my leg (done the manly way - ice skating) and got a spiral fracture through my tibia just above my ankle. Had a plate attached to my leg and also got a screw through my ankle which comes out on July 1st. Obviously I`ve been in plaster since and hopefully come out of it in 2 weeks.

Just wanted to ask if anyone has had a similar injury and how long it took to recover? I keep hearing different things from everyone at the hospital. My foot is at a 90 degree angle at the moment, so will I need much physio after? (I`ve heard this is the hardest movement to get back) Some of the nurses have said I`ll need some, others say none, so bit confused.

I do alot of cardio in the gym and swimming so wonder how long it will be before I can get back to that, and have been told I could be aware of the plate, has anyone else got a plate and can you feel it much?

Thought I`d ask the community on here to get first hand knowledge and a realistic picture on things. Thanks

I`m no medical expert, but it will depend a fair bit on what age you are - the older you are the longer it`s likely to take. Is this the kind of information you`re willing to divulge? ;)

Dont know about the leg mate, but I had a spiral fracture in my hand (narrowly avoided having a plate put in) and for the first 3 years it hurt when the weather went cold, so you will probably be very aware of it, as I cannot imagine the plate taking any pain away.

Hi, never broken a leg but I`ve broken my arm a couple of times and probably had a month or so of physio.
How did you break it skating? I`m playing ice hockey at the moment but I`ve not come close to breaking a leg (thank god).

Cheers
Dave

It was a bit of a nasty fall. I hadn`t been skating for about 10 years, and had been on the ice for about half an hour and was doing pretty well I thought, but the rink was absolutely packed which made it difficult as loads of kids didnt seem to look where they were going.

One such kid went in front of me and looked like he was about to fall over, so I went to the right to avoid him, my right leg slipped up in the air, and I came down sitting down with my weight on my left leg. Couldn`t stand up so they took me off the ice on a chair thing, but it hadn`t broken all the way through by this point.

The paramedics turned up, and were checking my ankle because that`s where they thought was broken, but they thought it was ok, so asked me to walk on it. I took about 4 steps inside which felt ok, but then the first step I took outside to the ambulance I heard it click and almost fell down, so that must have finished it off. My ankle was bloody huge though, swelled up to the size of a tennis ball on both sides! Wish I could have got some pictures now and made some money from FHM lol

I have never understood this saying. How can you tempt fate. By defenition if it is fate then it is going to happen, tempted or not? I`ll go away now.

All the best,

Dr 42%er.

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

Ahh fate is a fickle thing likes to play games with you.

Hope you get better soon though as it sounds painful!!!

I broke the joint in my left knee! Wasnt allowed to walk on it for 8 weeks then splint was removed :(
Could walk next day but not very far & only fairy steps! Took another 4-5 weeks with physio to get back to normal! Although the knee still feels different after 2 years almost! >:(
