Starbreeze buys Cinemaware

RJS (undefined) posted this on Wednesday, 1st June 2016, 07:07

Remember the classic Cinemaware games on the Amiga? (And other platforms)

They just got bought lock stock by Starbreeze:
https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2016/05/31/844858/0/en/Starbreeze-AB-Starbreeze-acquires-the-rights-to-Cinemaware-s-classic-video-game-catalogue-including-It-Came-From-the-Dessert-Defender-of-the-Crown-Wings.html

Some of their output looks like also-ran FPS games, but they also released Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons which is apparently very good.

So we might see something interesting from the following IPs rather than awful free to play mobile versions:

  • The Cinemaware brand
  • Defender of the Crown
  • Wings
  • The King of Chicago
  • Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon
  • Lords of the Rising Sun
  • Rocket Ranger
  • It Came from the Desert
  • It Came from the Desert II: Antheads
  • SDI
  • TV Sports: Basketball
  • TV Sports: Baseball
  • TV Sports: Boxing
  • TV Sports: Football
  • TV Sports: Hockey

No Three Stooges?

Seriously though, It Came from the Desert (and the sequel) and Lords of the Rising Sun are some of my favourite games from any era. I really liked Wings as well and I had all of the TV Sports series. Rocket Ranger was graphically amazing for the time, but not the best gameplay-wise. I never really got into Defender of the Crown either.

I had and played these ones:

  • Defender of the Crown
  • Wings
  • Lords of the Rising Sun
  • It Came from the Desert
  • TV Sports: Football
I loved Wings too, played that a fair bit, and It Came From the Desert I think I completed but I'm not sure.

Defender of the Crown I dipped in and out of, I think because I got it cheap late in my Amiga's life and was already moving to PC games. Didn't play Lords of the Rising Sun much, I don't know why either, but I definitely had it as I remember the box art!

TV Sports Football I vaguely remember games taking ages, and often crashing after an hour which was very frustrating when you were playing against a friend.

I loved Cinemaware games on my Amiga, just hated all the disk swapping.

Whilst the reincarnation of Wings still worked, not quite as sure that Defender of the Crown would work as well without a serious re-vamp of the gameplay...
