Humphrey Bogart DVDs - which ones to get?

RWB (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 8th January 2003, 16:03

After buying The Maltese Falcon and loving it (see the review!), I was wondering what other Bogart titles are worth getting. I think the one with Lauren Bacall and the other girl (Martha something perhaps?) appeals most, but I can`t remember the plot/title of the film as I saw the trailer a while ago. Any help much appreciated. :)

Sounds like the excellent `The Big Sleep`, Martha Vickers plays Carmen Sternwood, daughter of the General who hires Bogart`s Marlowe. I`d recommend the R1 release, as it contains the 1946 film, and and earlier 1945 cut of the film, which explains the plot better, but scores less on atmosphere. Also contains a nice little doc on the 2 different versions.

What are the extras like on the R1 and R2 versions?

R2 Big Sleep has nothing in terms of extras as far as i can remember, but, as i said before, the R1 DVD has the well known 1946 version of the film, as well as the rarely seen 1945 version, plus a doc on these 2 cuts.

The earlier version isn`t anywhere near as good as the `46 version, but a great insight into the movies developement. The finished film is an absolute classic.

A new R1 special edition of Casablanca has been announced for later this year so I wouldn`t get the barebones release if I were you.

Also Key Largo is a grate film. It`s available as a barebones release in both R1 and R2.

Key Largo is a classic film - I`d go for that. Dead Reckoning is also pretty good. He plays a similar Sam Spade "hard git" character in both of those.

If you liked `The Maltese Falcon` then what are you doing? Go and get `the Big Sleep` NOW.

NOW I said!

How does High Sierra rate? Apart from TBS, which is the best?
